At age five, Esme was asked to write in her notebook, but instead, she filled it with drawings—the only way she knew to express herself. At seven, when it was discovered she was partially deaf, she found refuge in her sketchbooks. Shortly after, Esme made her first garment and a passion for sewing and designing was born. As a teenager, she made her way to London where her creative journey truly began.
Living in a squat with other young creatives, Esme made the most of her time; studying at Central Saint Martins, launching a clothing line called Swanky Modes with three friends and £50 each, watching Notting Hill Carnival with David Bowie and altering a dress for Cher. The '90s saw a career move into costumes for films, where she designed outfits for Trainspotting, Bridget Jones's Diary and The Beach, before she moved onto the small screen herself.
A celebration of a creative life lived differently, Behind the Seams is a reminder that it's never too early, or too late, to pick up a needle and start stitching in a new direction.

Colourful and inspirational
A fantastic autobiography with so many wonderful stories and lessons in life from a colourful woman I only perceived through the lens of Great British Sewing Bee. She is so much more, inspirational!

Great sewing read
Really enjoyed all the details, honest insight into Esme life. Great stories that cover the dynamic and interesting fashion, art and design world of the last half century!

Flashback to Fashion, Fun, and Fabulousness
I liked the story and it was really interesting to hear how she got started in the fashion industry. Truly amazing and brave. When Esme mentioned the Sewing Bee and said Patrick and her have great interaction with the contestants, I only saw snippets, perhaps an editing thing. And now I know more about her, where previously thought not much fun, I hope we see more in the next season as I love that show. I do love her fashion sense and quirky nature, both fabulous

Delightful
I found this book to be a delightful listen. It was interesting to hear the author’s story in her own voice. Also, valuable insight into the fashion industry then and now.

What an interesting life she’s had
Esme’s life has been so exciting and different. Coming from a fashion background myself, it’s been so interesting to listen to.
Definitely recommend a listen if you love the sewing and the Great British sewing bee, or even if you don’t it still a great listen.

So interesting...
I chose this book because I am a sewer and enjoyed GBSB immensely. It went beyond my expectations. Esme has certainly lead a very busy and interesting life.
