About this listen

Ruby Lennox was conceived grudgingly by Bunty and born while her father, George, was in the Dog and Hare in Doncaster, telling a woman in an emerald dress and a D cup that he wasn't married. Bunty had never wanted to marry George, but there she was, stuck in a flat above the pet shop in an ancient street beneath York Minster, with sensible and sardonic Patrica, aged five; greedy, cross-patch Gillian, who refused to be ignored; and Ruby...

Ruby tells the story of the family, from the day at the end of the nineteenth century when a travelling French photographer catches frail beautiful Alice and her children, like flowers in amber, to the startling, witty, and memorable events of Ruby's own life.

An absorbing read

This is the telling of a family saga through the eyes of Ruby, the youngest Lennox child.
It is a beautifully constructed story with Ruby’s humour and perception a definite highlight.

What is the meaning of this book?

I love Kate Atkinson’s books that I have read previously, but I didn’t like this one so much. There is no character development. There are plenty of characters but that’s it. The family members don’t really connect with each other and the siblings don’t have any emotion for each other which I found very odd. How can a sister not feel anything for the loss of a sibling or a mother is beyond me. I don’t think I will listen to any other of her books.
Story: There didn’t seem to be a storyline, no plot. People live, people die, the end.

Narration: generally very enjoyable. When narrating young girls the voices didn't change from when they were adults which I found confusing.
