About this listen

When she arrived in New York on her 18th birthday, carrying nothing but $600 cash and a stolen camera, Alice Lee was looking for a fresh start. Now, just one month later, she is the city’s latest Jane Doe, an unidentified murder victim.

Ruby Jones is also trying to start over; she travelled halfway around the world only to find herself lonelier than ever. Until she finds Alice’s body by the Hudson River. From this first, devastating encounter, the two women form an unbreakable bond.

Alice is sure that Ruby is the key to solving the mystery of her life - and death. And Ruby - struggling to forget what she saw that morning - finds herself unable to let Alice go. Not until she is given the ending she deserves.

Before You Knew My Name doesn’t ask whodunnit. Instead, this powerful, hopeful novel asks: who was she? And what did she leave behind? The answers might surprise you.

Brilliant

Beautifully crafted. Clever. I listened over two days whilst painting a room, completely drawn in - like I was there, like the characters & places were real.
Didn’t want it to end… thought provoking. Perfect narration. Top of my favourite list.

Enjoyable

The only think that disappointed me in the performance was that the Aussie accent sounded like a Kiwi accent.

Aussie

A great read, very expressive even in the intense bits. Aussie accent is actually New Zealand though which is pretty off putting for an Australian to listen to.

A powerful piece of fiction

So we’ll written and insightful, the book took the unique narration of a dead girl to tell her story. I loved it.

Mixed feelings

There were things I liked about the story, but it needed polishing. I didn’t enjoy the narration - the Australian accent irritated me and the narration of the male characters made them seem like caricatures. The story was easy to listen to.

Slow start

Very slow and a little hard to follow at the start. I understand the writer's need to lay out the background of the characters, but it takes 3 hours before you get to anything decent in the story. Once the main story line actually unfolds it was good.
As mentioned in other story's the accents were hard to listen to. I enjoyed the ending.

Wow - what a book

A beautiful narrated, poignant story. Highly recommend. The Aussie accent needed some help - especially Melbun! Apart from that, wonderful.
