Publisher's Summary

New York Times Bestseller

Read by the author.

Jinger Vuolo, the sixth child in the famous Duggar family of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On, recounts how she began to question the unhealthy ideology of her youth and learned to embrace true freedom in Christ.

When Jinger Duggar Vuolo was growing up, she was convinced that obeying the rules was the key to success and God's favor. She zealously promoted the Basic Life Principles of Bill Gothard,

  • fastidiously obeying the modesty guidelines (no shorts or jeans, only dresses),
  • eagerly submitting to the umbrella of authority (any disobedience of parents would place her outside God's protection),
  • promoting the relationship standard of courtship, and
  • avoiding any music with a worldly beat, among others.

Jinger, along with three of her sisters, wrote a New York Times bestseller about their religious convictions. She believed this level of commitment would guarantee God's blessing, even though in private she felt constant fear that she wasn't measuring up to the high standards demanded of her.

In Becoming Free Indeed, Jinger shares how in her early twenties, a new family member—a brother-in-law who didn't grow up in the same tight-knit conservative circle as Jinger—caused her to examine her beliefs. He was committed to the Bible, but he didn't believe many of the things Jinger had always assumed were true. His influence, along with the help of a pastor named Jeremy Vuolo, caused Jinger to see that her life was built on rules, not God's Word.

Jinger committed to studying the Bible—truly understanding it—for the first time. What resulted was an earth-shaking realization: much of what she'd always believed about God, obedience to His Word, and personal holiness wasn't in-line with what the Bible teaches.

Now with a renewed faith of personal conviction, Becoming Free Indeed shares what it was like living under the tenants of Bill Gothard, the Biblical truth that changed her perspective, and how she disentangled her faith with her belief in Jesus intact.

A great listen

As someone who has not grown up with religion, this was a fascinating book. From the start I knew it would be very focused on religion, and I did find some parts hard to focus because I am not someone who understands the bible. However I really enjoyed the parts about her life story and how she has come to stand by the beliefs that she has. My only criticism would be her understanding of diversity seems to be different branches of Christianity, and while she has acknowledged that she has friends who have grown up with different Christian beliefs, from what she has said I would be suprised if she is friends with anyone of a different faith and cultural background.

Really enjoyed it

I found this audiobook fascinating. As a fan of Bringing Up Bates, I had heard of the Duggar family, but didn’t know much about them (apart from the fact that they had 19 kids). Not long after I became a Christian, I got tangled up in a bit of a cult, so Jinger’s recounting struck so many chords with me. The journey of realising what you’re being told is wrong & not in line with the Bible, & pulling yourself away to re-educate yourself, is a hard one. Jinger is honest, vulnerable & very brave. She earnestly wants to know God & follow Him the way He intended. I’m so glad she found a way to be truly free, & that she’s helping others to find that freedom. Thanks, Jinger.

Great read for my first audiobook

I really appreciated this book. I listened to it over the space of a weekend! Although I was not involved in this type of upbringing I could see some legalistic similarities to my upbringing. Thank you for sharing your story, it was insightful, respectful & God honouring. I’ll be praying for you & your family as God continues to use you both in your ministry.

Very moving and insightful

I live on the other side of the world and have never been part of organized religion, so the life of the Duggars in Arkansas was completely foreign, curious and fascinating. Jinger’s book gave me a real insight into how and why they believed what they did. Concerns I had, particularly surrounding women and girls, were validated. I don’t know Jinger, but I feel relieved she found her way out. Jinger, you so clearly have such a good heart. I hope those that need to hear your words do, and I wish nothing but the best for you and your family. Thanks for sharing your story.

Nearly Gave Up

Jinger appears judgemental, even after reassessing her IBLP roots. Bible quotes are open to interpretation. In summary, be kind, follow the 10 commandments and save yourself this boring slog! Don’t waste an Audible credit on this book.
