About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Binge-watched Normal People and Love Is Blind and now looking to escape into another suitably steamy love story? Look no further....

Two writers, one holiday. A romcom waiting to happen....

January is a hopeless romantic who narrates her life like she's the lead in a blockbuster movie.

Gus is a serious literary type who thinks true love is a fairy-tale.

But January and Gus have more in common than you'd think:

They're both broke.

They've got crippling writer's block.

And they need to write best sellers before summer ends.

The result? A bet to swap genres and see who gets published first.

The risk? In telling each other's stories, their worlds might be changed entirely....

Set over one sizzling summer, Beach Read is a witty love story that will make you laugh a lot, cry a little and fall head over heels. For fans of The Flat Share and If I Never Met You.

Perfect beach read

I read this book while on holidays at the beach. Thoroughly enjoyed it! I found it to be a classic romantic comedy whilst at the same time it poked fun at the genre. While it didn’t take itself too seriously it was also deep, thoughtful, well written and very funny. Loved it :-)

Thanks Emily and Julia

It was like coming home listening to Julia narrate this story. The plot was interesting and the characters complex.

Interesting Twist

Emily Henry's story crafting is a delight. A simple story, with a twist, that takes you on a journey of self reflection and insights that just creep up and reveal themselves coupled with some laugh out loud moments. Julia Whelan's narration is as always perfect.

Thank you to the both of you!

Very easy listen, great story to escape into

I’m not usually a fiction reader, however I got drawn into this one very easily. Relatable story arch and characters

good confusion

Nice light hearted book, very interesting story line even if you more or less figure the end out.

Good narration but the writing had me cringing

The inner monologue of the main character just had me cringing and skipping ahead in so many parts. Her emotions were so predictable that they were boring. I did buy this just for an easy listen so wasn’t expecting too much. The narration was good.

Great story teller but I keep meeting the same characters in her books

This is the fourth book I have listened to by Emily Henry. I like her characterisation and the dialogue between the main characters is believable and often very amusing. The narrator is great. But….and it is a big ‘but’ - I feel that the two main characters in every book are the same people, with some physical characteristics changed and moved into a different plot line. The similarity is in how they relate and talk to each other. I am only a quarter through Beach Road but not sure I’ll finish it as I can, of course, guess the ending. Perhaps her books should be read over several years with big gaps in between. There’s no doubt she can write and her plots are good, but perhaps she could bring in new people.

Deeper than the name suggests

Multidimensional characters, cleverly hilarious banter and the depth to the story all contribute to making this a great listen. Loved it.
