About this listen

Ray McKenna returns from the war in Iraq to find that she had attained unwanted celebrity status back home. As the only surviving American soldier of a well-publicized hostage crisis, she is the center of attention at a time when all she wants is solitude. Struggling to overcome the fear and anxiety that plague her, she relies on her psychiatric therapy dog Jagger to help her through the vicious symptoms of PTSD. Veterinarian Dr. Carly Warner hasn't yet figured out how to open her heart to the possibility of falling in love again after the death of her longtime partner. When Ray McKenna walks into the North Coast Veterinary Clinic with Jagger, she and Carly begin a friendship that takes them both by surprise. Brought together by their shared love of dogs, Ray and Carly discover that they are both capable of moving forward, if only they are brave enough to try.

Great story, terrible narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes and No.

This story is one of my favourites, I've read the book several times. So when it became available on audible, I happily bought it to listen to as I walk.

It is seriously the worst narration I have ever listened to - and I got my kids to record their picture books when they were 6! It's not just the narrator's voice that was bad, the audio editing is terrible too.

What did you like best about this story?

I love the in depth characters. The reality of PTSD and anxiety is shown beautifully.

How could the performance have been better?

It would have been better with a decent narrator and good sound engineering.

My Favourite Meghan O’Brien Book

I have now read this book on multiple occasions - it’s safe to say it’s easily my favourite Meghan O’Brien book and high up on my list of All Time Favourites.

The story majestically sets the scenes for our two main characters and artfully intertwines their lives, both of whom are recovering from extremely traumatic histories.

My only criticism would be the voice actress’s performance, which was dismal. I felt my eyes twitch on numerous occasions due to the extremely poor skill and devastating vocal interpretation of each and every time a character spoke.

Fortunately, Meghan O’Brien’s story telling is so good you can nearly, kind of, almost shove aside the terrible performance.

Worth a listen. Most definitely worth a read.
