Publisher's Summary
This is the revised and expanded edition of a new kind of introduction to economics for the general public, without graphs, statistics, or jargon. However, the enlargement of this edition is not just more of the same. In addition to being updated, Basic Economics has also become more international, with the inclusion of economic problems from more countries around the world, because the basic principles of economics are not confined by national borders. Each chapter reflects the experiences of many different peoples and cultures.
Critic Reviews
"Clear and concise....Among economists of the past 30 years, [Sowell] stands very proud indeed." (The Wall Street Journal)
"Basic Economics is not only valuable for a general lay-person audience, it would also benefit lawyers, politicians, and, yes, economists, as well." (Washington Times)

A little one sided.
The content was a bit slow for me and stayed on one topic too long, probably because I have studied economics at university. Overall it made some valid point and worked to show people how the economy actually works however some aspects it suggested should be market driven such as healthcare I think should have been looked at from a wider perspective, overall very American views.

compelling, insightful and essential
Thomas Sowell is a clear thinker, great teacher and masterful communicator. This book offers a compelling grounding in economic principles, delivered with no nonsense practical clarity - rather than abstract concepts or jargon.
Sure, it could be argued that there are some of Sowell's well known ideological biases in places. I suspect he could have given more weight to failures of the market mechanism. That said, there are essential truths and principles here.
Everyone should get acquainted with this book. I'm glad I did.
