Nella solitudine delle foreste e dei ghiacciai alpini si svolge l'avventura esistenziale della giovane guardia forestale Barnabo, custode, insieme ad alcuni compagni, di una polveriera in alta montagna.
In seguito all'attacco di alcuni banditi la polveriera viene espugnata e il comandante delle guardie ucciso. Barnabo, che aveva abbandonato il posto di guardia, viene radiato dal corpo e costretto ad abbandonare la montagna per andare a lavorare in pianura.
