About this listen
Here, in his own words, is the true story of America's wildest flying hero, of his extraordinary heroism, and of his greatest battle of all-the fight to survive.
The World War II air war in the Pacific needed tough men like Colonel Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron. The legendary Marine Corps officer and his bunch of misfits, outcasts, and daredevils gave a new definition to "hell-raising" - on the ground and in the skies.
Pappy himself was a living legend-he personally shot down 28 Japanese planes, and won the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. He broke every rule in the book doing so, but when he fell into the hands of the vengeful Japanese his real ordeal began.

A truthful account of a war veteran
A very interesting down to earth account of a War veteran, I very much enjoyed the book

MY FAVOURITE AUDIBLE SO FAR.
Loved the entire book. Had read about Boyington before and watched the Tv series , but this is like a whole new story. Would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the Pacific war. Great narration also.

Baa Baa Blacksheep
Loved the Story of Pappy .... I saw the series on TV as a kid, (I know the Book is different to the Series) but I was enthralled in his History.
I felt the Narrative was more English than American and that put me off a little bit but overall I loved it. ❤👍👍👍👍

good read, took a while to get to the meat of it.
would recommend - little slow to start with but a surprisingly honest account. The author pragmatically self assesses his own failings

Relevant today
Boyington’s story is not be modern veterans can connect with. Highs of flying and adventures followed by the mental scars and psychological turmoil afterwards. A useful professional start day for Air Force cadets the world over and military professionals more broadly.

great story, well worth a listen
a great story about a flawed personality who had made plenty of mistakes in life. A person who excelled in combat, leadership, whilst fighting the system and alcoholism. Was very hard to stop listening to the first half. The second half was a little slower going, but still interesting. He had a tough life post the war, but finally got it together after beating the alcohol and being happy in his own skin. I wish that he added what happened post 1957 until he passed 1988.

A disappointing conclusion
It starts off slow, gets a little more exciting with the Flying Tigers, but ends up getting boring. Then progresses quickly to Guadalcanal but flames out just when it is beginning to get interesting. Then he gets captured as a POW but gets fairly boring again and finally at the end he just admits he is an out of control drunken alcoholic moving from one disappointment to the next.
Not really inspiring and hardly a motivational piece. The legend does not live up to all the hype.

Baa Baa ho-hum
This is probably a really great book and I will probably buy the hard copy.
However, the narrator is so mono toned and boring I find it painful to listen to more than 4 chapters.
His Voice has the excitement and feeling of a funeral.

Amazing, sad story
Great pilot, tragic life, lots of the story missing, needed Jesus to be his strength.
