Women of Controversy: Mary Magdalene

  • Summary

  • Mary Magdalene (fl. 1st Century AD) was a woman who, according to the New Testament, traveled with Jesus as one of his followers and witnessed his crucifixion and resurrection. Over time, her identity had become conflated with several other Marys in Christian scripture, and her veneration has reflected the shifting role of women in the church.
