About this listen

Jackman and Evans are back in the latest gripping thriller by Joy Ellis, performed by the incomparable Richard Armitage.

Jackman’s sister-in-law Sarah disappears to London and throws herself into the river. What drove her to this? She was a woman with a seemingly happy homelife and two beloved sons. DI Jackman and DI Evans dig into Sarah’s life. And Jackman realises he knew almost nothing about his sister-in-law’s past.

Then, they discover a woman in a neighbouring village died in similar circumstances. What is the connection to a convicted murderer whose family are convinced he is innocent? Who is really pulling the strings?

Immerses you in the quest to work out 'Who dunnit'

Joy Ellis has delivered the goods yet again, weaving intrigue from start to finish. I could hardly put it down.
The characters have become old friends and thoroughly enjoying their development as I progress through the series.
As always, a pleasure listening to Richard Armitage

Loved the plot and characters

I liked the plot and well developed characters.
I did think I had worked out early who might have done it but there was an element of doubt so still enjoyable

Great to join Jackman again, but...

great to join Jackman and and his team again, but the storyline got in the way at times, with characters coming from all directions, taking away from the actual crime part of the drama, drifting into the melo - if you get my ...! It all seemed a bit rushed and unbelievable, especially with this sadistic killer wandering the fens seemingly at will, the response of the police beggared belief at times, as did the convenient romances and pregnancy. Not all women need pairing up Joy!

Riveting

I was hooked after the 1st book in this series and found the 4th the most compelling of all.
Joy structures her plot so carefully and methodically, the suspense is gripping. The tension is superbly interwoven with character development that leaves you wanting nothing but the best outcomes for the chief protagonists.
Richard is a gifted and engaging narrator whose voice flows seamlessly through the identiable portrayl of so many interesting characters.

Joy Ellis does it again

I've been eagerly awaiting the new Jackman and Evans since I discovered Joy Ellis a few months back and promptly listened to 10 of her books in a row. The Guilty Ones was excellent. The story was fascinating, exciting, and very well written. There's a new killer in town and he seems to be targeting people connected to an old case involving the murder of a teenage girl. The killer was tried and convicted and later committed suicide in prison but the family never believed Brandon was guilty. This case hits very close to home for Jackman and he, Marie, and the team will not rest until they've uncovered the truth and brought this sadistic killer to justice. 5 stars and I can't wait for the next instalment.

Twists and twisted

I am a great fan of Joy Ellis’s work. DI Jackman and DS Evans are a wonderful team and good friends. Their support of each other and their team makes for a lovely feeling in this team. What I enjoyed in this book was the connection that was made with Joy’s other series through DCI Cameron.
The perpetrator of the crimes in this story is a very damaged man. His twisted view of the world caused grief for many people and hit home with Jackman’s sister-in-law. His family’s sorrow was heartfelt. The amazing way that the investigation team collects information and pieces it together always surprises me.
Joy has crafted a complex and suspenseful story, while developing the personal characteristics and relationships of the investigation team. It is lovely to have both and it is what has encouraged me to read everything Joy has written.
I love Richard Armitage’s reading. His voice is very seductive and his voices have become the characters for me. I can’t think of the characters without thinking of his voices. Thank you

Great Story with a VERY warped villan.

Can't wait for the next one. Very descriptive and exceptionally well narrated. Finished this book in two long driving sessions which made the time and kilometres fly by.

And the tension builds!

I find the only way to stop myself from skipping over the really scary bits is to listen while driving long distances. Having thoroughly enjoyed the story and the Narrator I now need to find another Joy Ellis book for my eight hour drive tomorrow. Thanks Joy for the entertainment.
