About this listen

Winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award.

Meet Jimmy Flick. He's not like other kids - he's both too fast and too slow. Jimmy's mother, Paula, is the only one who can manage him. She teaches him how to count sheep so that he can fall asleep. She holds him tight enough to stop his cells spinning. It is only Paula who can keep Jimmy out of his father's way. But when Jimmy's world falls apart, he has to navigate life on his own and make things right.

Critic Reviews

"Laguna creates a world and a character and a language that we become immersed within.... This is humane, passionate, true." (Christos Tsiolkas)

Great Australian story

Loved this book as told through the eyes of an autistic child. About domestic violence, alcoholism, Australian families and a mothers love. The narrator is very talented and made listening to this book even more enriching. A worthwhile "read"

Great read for young adult and adult audience.

Poignant and thoughtful story, with a realistic portrayal of this family s struggle. Most impressive was the insight into the way an autistic boy sees the world. Definitely worth reading. Sue

Magnificent

Loved this story. It has settled permanently in my nerve endings and memory cages. Sophie Lagunas is a master story teller.

Beautifully written

It takes a while to get used to the narration because it’s the voice of a child, but the narrator is brilliant and brings the story to life.
This is a heart-breaking story of a child. I was so relieved that there was hope in the end. Highly recommend!

Brilliant

At first I found Jimmy to be really annoying...but as the book went on ... a deeper understanding of this beautiful troubled little boy overtook you. Terrific writing.

superb

We have book clubbed this book & scored 10/10. Sofie Laguna has skilfully crafted a potentially bleak subject with humour and insight. Brilliant!

Such a heart wrenching story of the struggles some people have in their journey through life.

Sad

Troubled lives, quite q depressing tale that gives a real insight into living on the fringe. How is it that some families have such tragic stories, one tragedy on top of another.
This is certainly a case of "life wasn't meant to be easy!"
