Questa autobiografia, che avrebbe potuto intitolarsi, secondo uno scherzo di Gertrude Stein, "La mia vita con i Grandi" è stata voluta da Gertrude Stein, e poiché Alice non si è mai decisa a scriverla, l'ha scritta la stessa Gertrude, utilizzando lo stesso linguaggio semplice con cui "Defoe ha scritto l'autobiografia di Robinson Crusoe".
