Louise Aston, geb. Hoche, fiel schon zu Lebzeiten durch ihr "unangemessenes" Verhalten auf. Sie wurde, erst als Frau, später dann als Autorin emanzipatorischer und revolutionärer Schriften (Romane, Essays und Lyrik) von männlicher Seite scharf kritisiert und sogar sabotiert. Astons Publikationszeit erstreckte sich auf einen schmalen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren von 1849 bis 1850. Die Aufmerksamkeit auf ihr Werk zur Publikationszeit war eher aus kritischen Quellen zu entnehmen, da ihr erster Roman Aus dem Leben einer Frau stark biographisch gefärbt erschien und man in diesem Werk einen möglichen Anreiz zur Nachahmung sah. Deshalb stand man dem Roman sehr skeptisch gegenüber. Überhaupt wurde Astons "Einsatz für Frauen und Arbeiter sowie ihre Beteiligung an den 48er Barrikadenkämpfen als bloße Sensationslust oder überspannte Renommiersucht missdeutet".
