About this listen
auē
- (verb) to cry, howl, groan, wail, bawl.
- (interjection) expression of astonishment or distress.
Taukiri was born into sorrow. Auē can be heard in the sound of the sea he loves and hates and in the music he draws out of the guitar that was his father’s. It spills out of the gang violence that killed his father and sent his mother into hiding and the shame he feels about abandoning his eight-year-old brother to a violent home.
But Taukiri’s brother, Ārama, is braver than he looks, and he has a friend, and his friend has a dog, and the three of them together might just be strong enough to turn back the tide of sadness.
This bestselling multi-award-winning novel is both raw and sublime, introducing a compelling new voice in New Zealand fiction.

Although this is a sad story it is written beautifully and very well narrated, making it a great story of Aotearoa NZ

Wow
Wow, this was hard to listen to yet I couldn't stop. The way this was written (and told) where I got to know each character and their connection to one another over time was very well done, as was the way that a range of complex issues were delved into.

Riveting and powerful
The narration of Ari was excellent. The story held me to the end. So much sadness and pain.
A story that should be told!

Hard hitting Truths
The different narrators were superb and made the impact of this tragic story incredibly real. While I found it increasingly sad I felt the truth and heartbreak for what it is, for those whose lives are impacted by these .patterns of violence and poverty. There are sparks of joy and love but this is not a happy story. it is however an honest story!
