About this listen

ASSISTANT WANTED: Notorious, high-ranking villain seeks loyal, levelheaded assistant for unspecified office duties, supporting staff for random mayhem, terror, and other Dark Things In General. Discretion a must. Excellent benefits.

With ailing family to support, Evie Sage's employment status isn't just important, it's vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn's most infamous Villain results in a job offer—naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don't find evil so attractive, Evie.

But just when she's getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat . . . and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain—and his entire nefarious empire—out.

Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work . . . and ensure he makes them pay.

After all, a good job is hard to find.

Contains mature themes.

The cutest story

Feels like watching an episode of the office in a cosy fantasy setting. Charming characters, hilarious interactions, and a beautiful fantasy world! The narration isn’t as strong, but still worth a listen!

The story was amazing - narration not so good.

The book itself was amazing. The author was able to balance the dark humor nicely with the emotional moments. I really enjoyed the main character didn't spend the whole book angsting over their morals and all of that. The narrator really made it hard to get through and the only reason I got to the end was because I loved the story so much. Tip for other listeners - I changed the reading speed to 1.10 or 1.15 and it made the narration sooooo much better. By doing that it made the the book a somewhat worthwhile listen. As the narration was already quite slow, it didn't make it too fast to listen to. So I would still recommend taking the chance on this book as the writing is really worth putting up with the narration.

Loved it! But poor narration.

Great story with humour, romance and a great plot but the narrator was absolutely painful. Her stunted narration…really took…away…from the story. It got so annoying!!!! The flow was completely lost from when I read the actual novel and I only bought this audiobook as it is my most favourite novel and wanted to listen to it while I drove to and from work.

The characters are great

While I think the start is a little shaky, once the story gets properly going it's quite fun, interesting and wholesome. The main two characters are both quite odd in a way which is endearing, and the side characters are generally quite fun. This is a good read if you're looking for something relatively light and fun in a fantasy setting with good characters. Looking forward to the sequel.

Brilliant!!!

Cannot recommend this enough! Not remotely my normal genre but had been recommended by a friend and she was spot on. Loved all the humour and was actually giggling out loud in parts. So well written. I cant wait for the next book ❤

Poor Narration, but the story is strong enough to save it.

With in the first five minutes I had paused the book to exclaim to a group of baffled commuters at the train station, “Oh this is heartbreaking”
I wasn’t talking about the story. Because I was desperate for this book and nether the ebook or print copies are available for weeks, I gave it another shot.
Soon the Narration fell away and all I heard was the story. And man did I hear it.
If you can get past the Narration you will love this book.
Despite the above I do recommend giving it a try.

Narration does not match the quality of the story

Really lovely book and a strong storyline. I have given up on the narrator and I’m not usually one to leave reviews but justice really hasn’t been given to this book. A great story, but would recommend ordering a physical copy rather than wasting a credit on this narration. I just don’t think it’s a good match. I really hope someone like Stella Bloom I hope is contracted for the next novel. DNFd on performance

Fun, Cozy Fantasy

This is such a fun, cosy fantasy and I can not wait for the second book. I wish I had it now.
loved the dynamic between the assistant and the villan.
The narrator was very robotic unfortunately and the subpar delivery was a bit annoying. Not enough to get me to stop listening though.
