Desde tiempos de los iberos y de los celtíberos, los lugares adecuados para la defensa o el ataque se vieron fortificados con construcciones acordes con las técnicas que estos pueblos dominaban. Pero al evolucionar la poliorcética, o arte militar, las construccio­nes militares fueron adquiriendo una nueva fisonomía. La palabra "castellum", de la que se deriva "castillo", es un diminutivo de "castrum", el asentamiento militar romano por excelencia. En principio tuvieron carácter temporal, y fueron instrumentos de ataque más que de defensa. Pero en su forma definitiva el castillo es producto de la Edad Media, como reducto y morada de los señores feudales.
