About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.
The globe-trotting spy thriller that inspired the upcoming action blockbuster
Argylle , featuring a star-studded cast including Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Cena, directed by Matthew Vaughn of Kingsman trilogy fame.
One Russian magnate's dream of restoring a nation to greatness has set in motion a chain of events which will take the world to the brink of chaos. Only Frances Coffey, the CIA's most legendary spymaster, can prevent it. But to do so, she needs someone special.

Enter Argylle. His life came to a crashing halt as a teenager. Since when he has been treading water, building barriers between himself and the world. Until one moment of compassion and brilliance will bring him to the attention of the most powerful woman in the secret world.

Coffey knows all about Argylle's dark past. She knows it haunts him. But she also knows it may give him the skills to join the team going up against one of the most powerful men in the world. His crash course in espionage will take him from the jungles of Thailand to the boulevards of Monaco, from the monasteries of Mount Athos to a forgotten cavern buried deep in the mountains.

It is a deathly rollercoaster ride that will either make him - or break him...

This was so fun

I’d like every reviewer who says this is unoriginal to please leave a detailed list of similar books because I really enjoyed this and want so much more!

There are a lot of characters to keep up with, and quite a lot of repeating dialogue (which makes it very easy to follow along with the plot) but both of these lend to a modern, entertaining spy adventure.

I think the trick with this book is to not think too hard about it and you’ll quite enjoy yourself.

A good old fashioned treasure hunt! A little predictable but kept me enthralled!!!

I have always loved a good old fashioned treasure hunt with spies all racing to the finish line and a mole amongst them!!! It’s a timeless plot and there were parts in the book where I was hanging on every word. Some of the colour scenes were so well written I was right there with the characters gasping for air with them!!!! A little bit predictable with the Russians and the baddies. I knew very early on who the mole was going to be. But regardless of this, I absolutely loved the book. It was a great read. Entertaining and fun. Argylle is a really endearing character. Pretty awesome first book I believe. Well done Elly Conway. Whomever you are!!!! ;)

NOT the movie!

Be warned, this is NOT the book of the movie. Anyhoo, still enjoyed this book. Fast paced, keeps you wanting to continue listening.

Brilliant! When is book number 2 coming out??!!

From the opening chapter, I knew this book was some special. I started listening and couldn’t stop.
Brilliant story line, well thought out and developed characters, it keeps you guessing on what might happen to the team next. Hoping that book number two is in the pipeline!!

Certainly adds to the mystery

What a strange ride. Well paced, decent spy read. Present tense always takes some adjustment but is executed well. Enough realism and overt fiction to be entertaining. Ending falls a little flat, but the progression until then is very nice.
But who is the author and how is this linked to the movie? A pseudonym? Ghost writer? Seems pretty well put together for a first novel. A whole movie made before the book was even published? "Next James Bond" seems a little hyped, however the book is quite good for mere movie marketing. So while the mystery of the author is may entice more than any twists inside the story, this one is worth the read and could easily roll into a decent series.

Bit ordinary

I was excited to purchase this book given the hype around the movie, however I was disappointed. The story line was unoriginal, the characters were hard to like as they were never really developed and I am no expert but i didn’t like the repetitive dialogue of the air being sucked out of the room to describe a tense scene. Maybe I’m a bit to old for this book.

Story is okay… nothing really original here

Main storyline has been done many many times over the years. Narration was okay. The book is very appropriate for adolescents and it does not portray the CIA in a serious light.
Some of the subplots were interesting and there were times the story could have evolved but nothing eventuated.

Enjoyable, but predictable with uninterested performance

Nice solid story, but feels like the author is writing for a movie scrip. Conversations are in a typical US American movie style. Performance sounded uninterested, but good idea to have a female narrator.

It’s not bad but not brilliant

This one was an enjoyable enough read and well written. It does lack originality though and is fairly predictable. It might also be better with a different narrator - they are better suited to reading sleep stories, lacking the range for an action story.
