About this listen
A Space Marine Conquests novel
The Word Bearers have come to despoil the Ecclesiarchy world of Almace - and it will take the Space Marines and the world's secretive leaders working together to prevent an apocalypse....
Listen to It Because:
Apocalypse is all about the biggest battles, and Josh Reynolds delivers that in this tale of three Space Marine Chapters waging war, with the fate of an entire world hanging in the balance.
The Story:
Following the cataclysmic Great Rift, forces from the Imperial Fists, White Scars and Raven Guard mobilise to defend the cardinal world of Almace from an invasion by the twisted traitors of the Word Bearers....
Lieutenant Heyd Calder is a Primaris Marine whose mastery of warfare is matched only by his diplomatic prowess. Under the orders of Roboute Guilliman, he is deployed to Almace, a minor seat of the Ecclesiarchy, to protect the world at whatever cost. Yet even as diabolical forces leer from the system's edge, Calder discovers that the capital's Cardinal-Governor, a sharp, inscrutable figure of spiritual and material authority, is hiding something. When it becomes clear that conquest is not the enemy’s sole aim, Calder resolves to uncover the secret of Almace. As the system is set ablaze, clashes of faith, strategy and politics ensue in the capital, and it becomes clear that the forces of the Ecclesiarchy and the Adeptus Astartes must fight together if they are to have any hope of victory.

All sides done well
Both the Imperium and the Chaos sides were done well. No major stupid acts that made them the scapegoat for the story. Each strived to out do each other without relying on "authors prerogative' to advance the story. Josh Reynolds gave both sides their due.

By-the-numbers, explosive sci-fi military action!
The quality of Black Library novels and audio production values always impresses me. This book is no exception. It is beautifully performed.
The story is pretty much what you can expect t from a 40k novel. Bloody action and brutal warfare, dark secrets and pseudoscience mysticism. And although there is little to complain about, the plot left me feeling as if I'd heard this story before... overwhelming odds, but with strategy, willpower and the grace of the Emperor, the defenders win out... but at such a personal cost.
There were some excellent characters and characterizations, but nothing in the story that made me sit up and go "wow".
In summary, a well produced romp that will not tax the brain: violent, entertaining cerebral candy-floss.

If you want Space Marines you get them
Interesting view on how several first founding chapters run in the current Imperium and the current status of the Word Bearers.

Excellent!
Several Space Marine chapters (Primaris) are tasked with preparing a world to withstand an oncoming invasion from a battle fleet led by Chaos Space Marines on a Crusade. Excellent narration and great characters. Really enjoyed this one. Will look for more 40k narrated by Richard Reed and written by Josh Reynolds.

A great book
It’s a really great listen.
Lots off action and intriguing.
Lots of really great characters.
You learn a lot about all 4 chapters in the story. Do yourselves a favour and have a listen.

Decent book
The character building was great and the narration was top notch however it felt to lack a bit of action to me. I would have liked a bit more in depth information about the final stages of the battle

Way better than Fist of the Imperium.
Spoiler Free
This book contains some of my favourite things, executed in a way that makes sense and is enjoyable. If you like Astartes being reasonable but still posthuman, interacting with normal humans, Word Bearers lore, the imperial navy being steadfast, big damn heroes moments without reducing main characters so they need to be rescued; pick this up. On the surface this has some similarities with "Fist of the imperium" but where that was disappointing and 'subverts expectations' by having smart characters be really dumb, Apocalypse delivers what a fan should expect.
