Ludmilu z Vartemberka, manželku královského prokurátora Oldřicha z Chlumu, navštíví na hradě Bezdězu její přítelkyně Anna z Rohozce. Již delší čas ji trápí podivné sny. V pitoreskním reji se jí v jeskyni zjevuje démon a zmocňuje jejího těla. Její otec přikládá Anniny vidiny častému pití vína a povolává exorcistu. Ludmila je však přesvědčena, že Anna mluví pravdu. Začne se vyptávat v okolí Bezdězu a záhy zjistí, že něco podobného zde zažily i jiné dívky. Naštěstí se právě vrací domů její manžel Oldřich z Chlumu se svým pomocníkem panošem Otou. Čeká je nerovný boj nejen s krutým vrahem, ale také s pověrami místních a intrikami severočeské šlechty.
