Der Kronprinz, sehr streng erzogen, mit einer Neigung zu Kultur und Kunst, stand als junger Mann in engem Kontakt und Briefwechsel mit dem französischen Philosophen Voltaire. Voltaire hatte Machiavelli in einer seiner Schriften zu den großen Männern gezählt, was den jungen Friedrich empörte. Hieraus erwuchs wahrscheinlich sein Wunsch, eine Gegenschrift zum "Principe" zu verfassen und sein Gegenbild eines guten und gerechten Herrschers zu entwerfen.
