About this listen

Anne of the Island was published in 1915, seven years after the best-selling Anne of Green Gables, partly because of the continuing clamor for more Anne from her fans - a fan base that continues to grow today!

In this continuation of the story of Anne Shirley, Anne leaves Green Gables and her work as a teacher in Avonlea to pursue her original dream (which she gave up in Anne of Green Gables) of taking further education at Redmond College in Nova Scotia. Gilbert Blythe and Charlie Sloane enroll as well, as does Anne's friend from Queen's Academy, Priscilla Grant. During her first week of school, Anne befriends Philippa Gordon, a beautiful girl whose frivolous ways charm her. Philippa (Phil for short) also happens to be from Anne's birthplace of Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia. Anne, always the good scholar, studies hard, but she also has many life lessons. This book sees Anne leave behind girlhood to blossom into a mature young woman.

very enjoyable

Narrator was very Canadian and lovely. She was true to the characters and a joy to listen to.
Enjoyed the story so much too. I have loved Anne for years, but never knew about any of the later books past Green Gables. Am addicted and have to hear them all!

Disappointing narration

This was always one of my favourite books in this series but I did not enjoy the narration at all. I found myself disliking some of my most beloved characters due to the voices she did for their dialogue! The narrator seemed to put emphasis in places that would subtly change the meaning and have amusement in her voice when there shouldn't have been. It was very off-putting and has made me think differently about characters that I consider childhood friends. While I love this book, I definitely cannot recommend this version.

Wooden performance, stopped listening

We (my 11 and 8 year old and I ) had already listened to rachel mcadams and Meghan follows reading the previous two Anne books. I chose this one based on reviews.

It is a terrible performance - so wooden and stilted that at first I thought it was computer generated. My 11 year old said she wasn’t enjoying it. We managed to listen to about 45 minutes of the 8 hours before deciding we couldn’t bear it anymore and switched it off.

Colleen Winton is not the right narrator for this book. There is so little variation in her voice and tone at time that it becomes monotonous and you find you’re not listening any more. I am sad I wasted an audible credit on this. I am going to look for another version and get a sample first .
