About this listen
Bloomsbury presents Animal by Lisa Taddeo, read by Emma Roberts.
'Joan is an unforgettable anti-heroine. I don't think I'll ever stop thinking about her’ Elizabeth Day
'So insanely good and true and twisted it’ll make your teeth sweat' Olivia Wilde
'Like a series of grenades exploding' Marian Keyes
I drove myself out of New York City where a man shot himself in front of me. He was a gluttonous man and when his blood came out it looked like the blood of a pig.
That’s a cruel thing to think, I know. He did it in a restaurant where I was having dinner with another man, another married man.
Do you see how this is going? But I wasn’t always that way.
I am depraved. I hope you like me.

Love
Somber and insightful, I related to protagonists view of the world and I adored this terse but genuine style of writing

It takes thinking out loud to a whole new level.
A very sad story but beautiful too.

Hmmm
The way this book was written, it doesn’t shy away or even pretend, it’s in your face, bold, vicious, unrestrained. The author’s words made me feel dirty. I felt visceral revulsion but some part of my brain admired the main character’s primal emotions and reactions to situations.
It’s honestly hard to describe this book. It’s more of an experience. You get lost in Joan’s psyche and bask in all her pain. Everything seems so vivid, you could practically taste the sweat off of the character’s brow.
Not for the faint hearted.

Loved it
I’m a sucker for a well written book that gives characters great depth and a storyline that keeps me guessing. Giving you enough of a taste to get you hooked and then spoonfuls all the way to the end, Lisa Taddeo writes an incredibly intriguing book about all the things we don’t often talk about out loud. A story that totally sucks you in. Trigger warning is probably required for some but aside from that, what a book!

Amazing
One of the best books I’ve read. Amazing, but brutal. The narrator is good enough as to not detract from the story. The story itself, wow. Just wow. I couldn’t get enough.

A unique read
Took me a while to enjoy this book but as the plot develops was brilliant and well written. Quite decrepit, shocking and sad, a story I won’t forget too soon. Great ending.

Looking at the world through the eyes of a late- thirties American woman.
I could find very little to like about the main character/ narrator, However it was fascinating to see the world through her jaundiced, cynical eyes.

Hard book to rate
This is an ugly book, filled with ugly, irredeemable characters. I usually enjoy reading about flawed humans but there was something about the main protagonist in this book that made me feel almost dirty.
It must have been very well written to have elicited such strong emotions in me, although I finished it, I couldn’t wait to get to the end and be done with it.

What a doozy
Gripping, powerful, painful and visceral. Incredible narration by Emma Roberts that made this book come alive. I love books by the likes of Gillian Flynn and Joyce Carol Oates and this book was an unstoppable force.
