นายทหารคนหนึ่งกลับจากสงคราม และได้พบกับแม่มดแก่หน้าตาน่าเกลียด ผู้บอกกับเขาว่า เขาจะร่ำรวยถ้าหากปีนเข้าไปในต้นไม้ และนำกล่องเชื้อจุดไฟมาให้กับนาง ภายใต้โพรงไม้นั่นเอง นายทหารได้พบกล่องที่เต็มไปด้วยเงินทองมากมาย ใบหนึ่งถูกเฝ้าโดยหมาที่มีตาใหญ่เท่าถ้วยชา อีกใบถูกเฝ้าโดยหมาที่มีตาใหญ่เท่ากังหันลม และอีกใบถูกเฝ้าโดยหมาที่ตาใหญ่เท่าหอคอยแห่งโคเปนเฮเกน แม่มดแก่บอกเคล็ดลับให้กับนายทหาร ให้เขาอุ้มหมาวางไว้บนพรมของนาง แล้วเขาก็จะผ่านเข้าไปได้โดยง่าย จะเอาเงินเอาทองไปสักเท่าไหร่ก็ได้ แต่อย่างเดียวที่นางต้องการคือ กล่องจุดเชื้อไฟเท่านั้น

นายทหารกลับมาพร้อมเงินทองเต็มกระเป๋าทุกใบ แต่เขาไม่ยอมให้กล่องจุดเชื้อไฟกับนาง และยังฆ่านางเสียด้วย ทหารใช้เงินที่ได้มาไปมากมายจนเงินหมด เขาต้องนอนอยู่เดียวดาย จึงนำกล่องจุดเชื้อไฟมาลองจุดแก้หนาว ผลคือ เจ้าหมาตาเท่าถ้วยชาโผล่มาและถามว่า "เจ้านายต้องการอะไร" นายทหารเรียนรู้ว่า เมื่อขีดไฟหนึ่งครั้ง เขาจะได้พบเจ้าหมาตาถ้วยชา เมื่อขีดไฟสองครั้ง จะได้พบหมาตากังหัน และถ้าขีดไฟสามครั้ง จะได้พบหมาตาหอคอย บรรดาหมาทั้งสาม พร้อมทำตามคำสั่งของเขาทุกอย่าง มาติดตามฟังกันว่านางทหารจะสั่งให้หมาทั้งสามตัวทำอะไร และชีวิตของเขาจะเป็นอย่างไรต่อไปได้ใน "กล่องปะทุไฟ"
