Critic Reviews

"Viskic has created a genuinely unique and captivating character who deserves a place alongside Jack Irish and Cliff Hardy." (P. M. Newton)
"Caleb is a compelling protagonist, equal parts tenacious, observant, proud and stubborn, but never unsympathetic." ( Books + Publishing)

Even better than the first one

This is my favorite type of crime novel. A good mystery but also a bit of depth. The book touches on a lot of important topics like discrimination, addiction and depression. Also enjoyed the flawed but likable characters and the fact that the book doesn't reduce their issues to black and white.

This book is the second part in a series. Recommend that you read the first book 'Resurrection bay' before this one because there are storylines which develop over the series.

My only small criticism of the audio is at times I felt the narrator was over cooking it a bit.

Absolutely brilliant

I am totally hooked. The author is magnificent. A narrator can let a good book down. A narrator can bolster a bad book. To me, this book is a five star combination and has the best of both - writer and narrator. I simply could not stop listening. 5*****

Well-written but confusing detective novel

I quite enjoyed this new novel, but thought there were too many characters in it. I kept asking myself 'now who is so-and-so again?', or 'have we heard that name before?' Eventually I sorted most of the characters out, but could not explain the full denouement of the story, having just finished listening to it. I have often found crime writers expecting readers to work out a strand of story from a vague suggestion. I may be stupid, but half the time I don't get these clues. I found the continual sparring of the two brothers Caleb and Ant rather tiresome, but both are interesting characters.
Reader Lewis Fitzgerald has a good voice, and an intelligent approach. However, he has the habit of letting his voice trail off towards the end of many sentences, with the result that I was often struggling to hear what he was saying. I am going slightly deaf, but I did understand him very well most of the time.

Great story telling, with fantastic setting

loved the setting of Resurrection Bay and the cast of complex characters. As good as early Cliff Hardy

Annoying main character

The main character is meant to be frustratingly low on emotional intelligence… and he is. But it’s infuriating and makes him a poor detective which I don’t enjoy reading.
