About this listen

“It’s rare that a book can be as funny and absolutely delightful as it is moving and thought provoking, and Anatomy of a Misfit is both.” (Lauren Oliver, author of Before I Fall)

Anika Dragomir is the third-most-popular girl at Pound High School. But inside, she knows she’s a freak; she can’t stop thinking about former loner Logan McDonough, who showed up on the first day of 10th grade hotter, bolder, and more mysterious than ever.

Logan is fascinating, troubled, and off limits. The Pound High queen bee will make Anika’s life hell if she’s seen with him.

So Anika must choose - ignore her feelings and keep her social status? Or follow her heart and risk becoming a pariah. Which will she pick?

And what will she think of her choice when an unimaginable tragedy strikes, changing her forever? Part Morgan Matson, part Nicola Yoon, this incredible YA voice narrates a story Teen Vogue calls “perfection in book form.”

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, September 2014 - This book reminded me a lot of the movie Mean Girls with a splash of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The hallmarks of adolescence are all present including the typical high school social hierarchies and multiple love interests. Anika, our protagonist, struggles with remaining the second-most popular girl at school behind "mean girl" Becky Vilhauer or standing up for herself and owning her uniqueness - regardless of how this could affect in her social life. I loved the story and found myself looking forward to each new chapter. Anatomy of a Misfit is a great choice for anyone looking for an entertaining tale about the microcosm of high school and how roles are created, developed, and even mutated for the good or bad. Strong Start, Weak Finish

Whilst the narration was top-notch & the story started strong with good character descriptions and humour, it all too quickly descended into typical YA melodrama with the central character caught in a love triangle so boring that the few-&-far-between funny bits were hard-pressed to entertain; & the ending, harking back to a not-even-sub-plot, came out of nowhere, completely unwarranted given the rest of the story. All in all, the book was well-written, but the story itself definitely wasn't. 2.5/5
