About this listen
Book one in a fantasy series of super rich magical dynasties and warring heirs - from the author of the million-copy-selling Alex Verus series. For readers of contemporary fantasy who enjoy the methods and magicians of dark academia...
ANYONE CAN USE MAGIC - IF THEY CAN AFFORD THE PRICE...
In a world where everything magical is bought up and controlled by the super rich - Stephen Oakwood has inherited a natural talent for magic. Plunged by his father's disappearance into a glittering world of scheming dynasties, warring patriarchs and vicious scions, Stephen must navigate magical high society and learn to control his gifts.
Dangerous enemies await the Oakwood heir, and even more dangerous allies: if Stephen cannot master his magic quickly and learn to distinguish friend from foe, his name may end up on the missing persons list, just like his father.

Good solid story telling.
I really enjoyed this, Great narration but for one word, Sigil. I tried to pretend 'siggle' was just a part of this world but it annoyed me every time. Anyway apart from that it was excellent, and I look forward to the next one (just please fix that one word!)

Interesting start
Maybe 3.5 rather than 4 stars.
Some interesting ideas, but it has a descided YA feel. Oh the unfairness of it all!
The pronunciation of "sigil" really grated, and it has to be one of the most used words in the book.

A powerful start to an exciting new series
I could not put this book down. sometimesit can be hard to lay down the foundation of a new series with out the story dragging a bit. But not here. The magic system is so fresh and interesting and the political intrigue is spot on! All this is beautifully carried by a a superb narration. I can't wait for the next one!

Charming fantasy
Stephen Oakwood is an ordinary bloke with a secret talent. Unfortunately for him, he's connected to a pretty awful powerful magic family and they don't like him. He has to teach himself how to harness his magical ability ... fast. Loved his relationship with his cat, Hobbs. Narrator is fantastic.

An excellent first book in series
An excellent first book in series. At least as good as his previous series. Very good narrator who suits the characters and story. Looking forward to the next book.

Loved it!
I was a touch worried about it being the first book in a new series but this did not disappoint. If you loved his pervious series I think you'll like this one too. There is some world building and skills building but this didn't distract from the actual story. By the end I really liked Steven and Hobs and wanted to hear more. It ends with quite a cliff hanger only making want book 2 now!!!
There is a PDF supplied for some details but I found I was able to work it all out without the sheet,
The narrator was great and kept the story going from the very start.

Fast paced and progressive
The narration was a little inconsistent, characters seemed to fall short of their identity after the first line or so of engagement..and for a word that is so significant, correct pronunciation should've been paramount (sigil).
The story was fast paced and enjoyable enough, I'm hooked on where it will go from here
