About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
An Infamous Army is read by Kristin Atherton, who appears in Waterloo Road.
The Battle of Waterloo. A heart-racing tale of adventure, love and fate against the backdrop of one of the most decisive battles in history by one of the greatest and best-selling romantic novelists of all time.
In 1815, beneath the aegis of the Army of Occupation, Brussels is the gayest town in Europe. And the widow Lady Barbara Childe, renowned for being as outrageous as she is beautiful, is at the centre of all that is fashionable and light-hearted. When she meets Charles Audley, dashing aide-de-camp to the great Duke of Wellington himself, her joie de vivre knows no bounds - until the eve of the fateful Battle of Waterloo....
Georgette Heyer was the creator - greatest practitioner - of the Regency romance, and An Infamous Army shows why she has won the hearts of a whole new audience with her sweeping historical fiction.

Remarkable
Remarkable story and excellent performance. I wanted to learn more about the Battle of Waterloo. This books detail is extraordinary. The romance of Babs and Charles was different from many other of the authors romances. When we met Charles in Regency Buck he was an absolute charmer brimming with charm and mischief. He and Babs were the perfect match. There were some lovely characters revisited. Judith and Worth. Best of all Vidal and Mary as elderly grandparents. Mary continues to offer gruel in the sick room. The scene with Charles and Harry on the battle field was poignant and heart breaking. Kristin captured the pathos of this interchange beautifully and I cried.
This is not a classic Heyer romance as large sections are involved with the battle strategy. Best audio book I’ve dived into for some time.

Wonderful!
And the detail - from frocks to firearms - is unparalleled. Performed exceptionally (I’ll be looking for other works read by Kirstin Atherton ... the performance can make or break an audiobook)!

More documentary than romance
If you think you might enjoy a recount in finite detail of the Duke of Wellington’s military engagement at Waterloo, hearing a description of the uniforms and culture of each country’s troops and the roles they played in the war and of Wellington’s every strategic move of the campaign described in minute detail, this book is for you. Heyer creates some exceptional romantic characters in this book but unfortunately they occupy second place to the recount of the detailed military strategy of Wellington and the bloody cost of war. With 30%romance and 70% historical facts I found myself skipping huge sections of this narration, much as I did when I read it 40yrs ago. As usual Heyer has done an enormous amount of research but unfortunately, by succumbing to the temptation to include all of it in this book, Heyer has diluted the romance and in this reader’s case, the enjoyment.
The narration was exceptional. The pronunciation of the names of people and places was masterful. Bravo narrator.
