Publisher's Summary

From the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series and the inspiration behind HBO's True Blood comes an electrifying new thriller centered on a young gunslinging mercenary, Lizbeth Rose.

Set in a fractured United States, in the southwestern country now known as Texoma, this is a world where magic is acknowledged but mistrusted. Battered by a run across the border to Mexico, gunslinger Lizbeth Rose takes a job offer from a pair of Russian wizards.

She may be young, but Gunnie Rose has acquired a fearsome reputation and the wizards are at a desperate crossroads, even if they won't admit it. They're searching frantically to locate the only man whose blood they believe can save their tsar's life.

As the trio journey through an altered America, they're set upon by enemies. It's clear that a powerful force does not want them to succeed in their mission. Lizbeth Rose is a gunnie who has never failed a client, but her oath will test all of her skills and resolve to get them all out alive.

The Dark Tower meets True Blood in this gritty and wildly entertaining tale of Gunnie Rose. A woman fighting unimaginable odds to keep her people alive after the disintegration of America, this is a surefire hit for fans of The Walking Dead or Westworld.

Interesting premise, characters, story

I liked this. It's an alt. reality story in the southern USA. I found the characters and premise interesting, and I was pleased that it was all new - with some authors, different series' are just the same people and challenges, just different names & skins. I quite liked the narrator as well. Her delivery's not as vivacious as other books I've heard but I think that suits the character. - I'll be continuing the series

Really kept me listening

I like Charlaine Harris' books - though the Aurora Teagarden series seems too tame for me and I haven't really got a handle on Midnight Crossroads, all the rest (Harper Connelly, Lily Bard, Sookie Stackhouse) have really interesting main characters and lots of conjecture about what others' motivations really are, stories that drive onward, and a value for kindness in a difficult world.

This is an alternate history - things happened differently because an assassination attempt which in our world failed to kill an American president in that world connected, and it was hard times from then on for most Americans. Especially for those in the contested desert lands - heat, snakes, bullets.

Terrible narration

Unfortunately I found this a terrible story to listen to! I haven’t read the book, so can’t comment if the punctuation is the cause for the terrible narration or if that is how Barbara Barnes always sounds.
It seemed like she was pausing in the wrong parts of sentences, her emphasis was on the wrong words and there is a complete lack of excitement in her voice for the majority of the story.
So disappointed
