About this listen

This audiobook is fascinatingly read by the author, Chris Hadfield.

Back on the earth after three spaceflights, Chris Hadfield's captivating memoir
An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth reveals extraordinary stories from his life as an astronaut, and shows how to make the impossible a reality.

Colonel Chris Hadfield has spent decades training as an astronaut and has logged nearly 4,000 hours in space. During this time he has broken into a Space Station with a Swiss army knife, disposed of a live snake while piloting a plane, and been temporarily blinded while clinging to the exterior of an orbiting spacecraft. The secret to Col. Hadfield's success – and survival – is an unconventional philosophy he learned at NASA: prepare for the worst – and enjoy every moment of it.

In An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, Col. Hadfield takes listeners deep into his years of training and space exploration to show how to make the impossible possible. Through eye-opening, entertaining stories filled with the adrenaline of launch, the mesmerizing wonder of spacewalks and the measured, calm responses mandated by crises, he explains how conventional wisdom can get in the way of achievement – and happiness. His own extraordinary education in space has taught him some counterintuitive lessons: don't visualize success, do care what others think, and always sweat the small stuff.

You might never be able to build a robot, pilot a spacecraft, make a music video or perform basic surgery in zero gravity like Col. Hadfield. But his vivid and refreshing insights will teach you how to think like an astronaut, and will change, completely, the way you view life on Earth – especially your own.

Fascinating

Where does An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I loved listening to this book and I was able to listen to it with my kids which made it even better. I gave my husband the written version which he wasn't able to get through but I found listening to the story interested and it kept me captivated

Inspirational and very interesting

Wow, Chris Hadfield is humble yet incredibly impressive, so stoic in the face of achievements that are in a real sense awesome. This was an enjoyable listen with some nice takeaways and lessons along the way. I feel if we all had more of his motivation, energy, tenacity and balance (both attitude and physical!) the world would be a much better place, thanks for sharing Chris!

Very interesting and inspiring

I really enjoyed this. I like how he walked through planning for all the worst outcomes while still being focused on ‘being a zero’ (neutral effect), which works towards others perceiving you as being a plus. Nice journey, nice sense of scale. Felt pretty special to be able to pause listening to go and watch the music video he sang and filmed in the ISS!
