About this listen

1817. As a young woman, clever, self-reliant Lydia Templeton scandalised society by rejecting Lewis Durrant, the county's most eligible batchelor.

Ten years later, Lydia has no regrets and, having concluded that matters of the heart need no longer trouble her, she is quite happy to remain unwed. But others still seek Lydia's advice on their love lives.

Not Jane Austen!

It was quite enjoyable - but the comparisons to Jane Austen are a bit of a stretch! I found it predictable and bit long-winded but it passed the time.

Fresh, engaging and witty amongst amongst a sea of dross

Oh, I enjoyed this book. After wading through dross of modern regency romance genre, this book felt like finding a gem in a dark room- it was fresh, engaging and witty. Characters were well developed (compared to most in the romance genre). I read in reviews a comparison to Jane Austen- I didn’t think so, except in crafting a novel for the most part in the everyday events, relying on the observation of human nature to carry us into the story. There is a paucity of the fantastic rollicking adventures that marks most of Georgette Heyer’s works. But I found the lead characters more sympathetic then any romance novel that I have read in a long time, and rather than finding humour in the absurdity of fantastic situations like Mrs Heyer, I found this book witty in the everyday. Quite witty, actually!
