The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so. The latest trainee detective to work with him is the son of a member of his former team, and together they begin to unravel the truth about what happened to Wayne Fletcher. As the investigation proceeds, it becomes clear that others are involved - some seem determined to prevent it, some seem to be taking too much interest. In the end, Smith operates alone, having stepped too far outside standard procedures to ask for support. He knows that his own life might be at risk but he has not calculated on the life of his young assistant also being put in danger.

Refreshing crime without the gore - well read!
This is a good story, well written and narrated by Gilart Jackson in full english flavour. Its more about the investigations and people than the usually gruesome books in this space. Strap in for a good yarn and a cup of tea!

Superb story and perfectly narrated
Authentic storyline. Excellent Narrator.
It has the perfect mix of witty dialogue, suspense and sentiment. With a healthy dose of sarcasm and humour.

Great story, great characters
Very enjoyable and entertaining storyline. DC is a great character with depth and personality. The humour is very enjoyable, had some laugh out loud moments. Definitely worth a listen. I’ll be continuing the series

Good listening
After a few awful listens in this genre I’m glad I came across this one. Loved the old experienced detective and the young one finding common ground and similar thoughts on the case. Loved the self deprecating humour. Just a sigh of relief that I can still find well written police procedurals.

Fantastic book.
I had to get used to the narrator's voice, but once I got to know the character of DC, the voice of Gildart Jackson was exactly right! Loved the story too.
