About this listen

The ideal lady wears lace, speaks quietly, and never - under any circumstances - fixes an automobile. But Gwyn Ruthers has never cared two snaps about being the ideal lady. With the war to end all wars exploding across the English Channel, she leaves behind her restrictive life as a chauffer's daughter to serve in an all-female ambulance unit in France. She's not about to let her social status or gender prevent her from serving her country. Not even a handsome captain can distract her from her mission. Most of the time.

Captain William Crawford wouldn't wish the ravages of war on any man, much less the captivating woman who insists on driving into battle instead of staying safely at home. He can't deny that the troops need more medical help but not when it puts innocent women in danger. How can he lead his men against the Jerries while worrying about Gwyn's safety?

Bound together by circumstances, Gwyn and William can't stop the love growing between them. Can their relationship survive, or will it become another casualty of war?

Great read

Great story but as others have said the narrater lets it down. The narrater used the same voice for all characters so it’s hard to follow who is talking. The accent is a bit annoying and doesn’t suit the characters. Otherwise a great story

Robotic narrator and bland story

The performance was so robotic and ordinary that I almost stopped listening. The story plot was very predictable.

Lovely story

I very much enjoyed this story but like a couple of others who have left a review, I did find the the narrator a little annoying at times.

Whether it was because she was trying to differentiate between the characters I don’t know but even the consistent ones’ accents varied from each conversation. The upper class ones that should have been easy were awful and the poor Liverpudlian lass sounded vaguely Irish at times.

I also found it hard to believe that our heroine would have been quite so eloquent and well spoken considering she was not from a privileged upbringing.

Regardless once I made myself stop getting frustrated with the changes in accent it was a lovely story.

Among the Poppies?

As a pure flight of fancy it’s passable, but as anything else it’s an insult to those who served and to anyone’s intelligence. Just some basic research on events on the Western front and the life of aristocrats and the military would have made it less ridiculous. Americanisms don’t work in a story about the British at that time in history.

Struggled through

Liked the story but really struggled listening to the narration. Would be better to read the book.
