About this listen
Startling, unusual, and yet irresistably readable, Among Others is at once the compelling story of a young woman struggling to escape a troubled childhood, a brilliant diary of first encounters with the great novels of modern fantasy and SF, and a spellbinding tale of escape from ancient enchantment.
Raised by a half-mad mother who dabbled in magic, Morwenna Phelps found refuge in two worlds. As a child growing up in Wales, she played among the spirits who made their homes in industrial ruins. But her mind found freedom and promise in the science-fiction novels that were her closest companions. Then her mother tried to bend the spirits to dark ends, and Mori was forced to confront her in a magical battle that left her crippled - and her twin sister dead.
Fleeing to her father, whom she barely knew, Mori was sent to boarding school in England - a place all but devoid of true magic. There, outcast and alone, she tempted fate by doing magic herself, in an attempt to find a circle of like-minded friends. But her magic also drew the attention of her mother, bringing about a reckoning that could no longer be put off.
Combining elements of autobiography with flights of imagination in the manner of novels like Jonathan Lethem's The Fortress of Solitude, this is potentially a breakout book for an author whose genius has already been hailed by peers like Kelly Link, Sarah Weinman, and Ursula K. Le Guin.

Sci-fi fans will wallow
Jo Walton creates a book that is more about the story telling than the story. The story telling gives an idea of her character more than the character she tells. Sci-fi fans will enjoy her nostalgia as well.

Still leaves you wondering
Was it all the imagination of a young girl, or was it a window to something that legends and myths are made from? Reality mixed with fiction, or the recounting of triumph over adversity? Listen to it and see.

Intriguing and beguiling
The Welsh accented Morwena draws you into her way of seeing the world with wit and charm. I wanted to keep listening to hear her unique take on surviving a tragedy, coping with the cruelty of girls in boarding school, finding her ‘curass’ and unexpected love, as well as her insights and experience of a magical world and faeries- and all her wry observations about people and sci fi and fantasy books and authors.

Growing Up in a World of Sci Fi and Fantasy.
I enjoyed this story of Mori, a young girl who has to battle her half-mad witch mother in Wales and the fantasy devoid life of boarding school in England. The story is, in part, told through Mori's diary so can sometimes feel that the plot is moving slowly, but at all times Mori's intelligence, frankness and bravery shine through.
Whilst the story telling involves Mori's love of sci-fi and fantasy novels, don't let this put you off - I know nothing about these genres but still loved Mori's descriptions of the books and authors.
The narrator is absolutely fabulous - making the Welsh accent simply beautiful to listen to.
A very different 'coming-of-age' tale (at least for me) with elements of fantasy, yet very much based in the real world.

Disappointing on many levels
The lit and tone of the narrators voice, becomes very annoying after a period of time.
