Publisher's Summary

“With American on Purpose, Craig Ferguson somehow manages to avoid the pitfalls of self-indulgence and self-importance that plague most (okay, all) Hollywood autobiographies. He has, instead, written a book that is hilarious and irrepressibly daft, yet also kind, poignant, and undeniably wise. It was a joy to read.” (Dennis Lehane, New York Times best-selling author of The Given Day)

Ferguson delivers a moving and achingly funny memoir of living the American dream as he journeys from the mean streets of Glasgow, Scotland, to the comedic promised land of Hollywood. Along the way, he stumbles through several attempts to make his mark - as a punk rock musician, a construction worker, a bouncer, and, tragically, a modern dancer. To numb the pain of failure, Ferguson found comfort in drugs and alcohol, addictions that eventually led to an aborted suicide attempt. (He forgot to do it when someone offered him a glass of sherry.) But his story has a happy ending: success on the hit sitcom The Drew Carey Show, and later as the host of CBS's Late Late Show. By far Ferguson's greatest triumph was his decision to become a US citizen, a milestone he achieved in early 2008.

In American on Purpose, Craig Ferguson talks a red, white, and blue streak about everything our Founding Fathers feared.

Touching, honest and funny, Autobiography

A wonderful account of Craig Ferguson's life growing up in Scotland to his current life in America (at the time of writing) It's a worts and all telling of his life, that's both brutally honest, touching & that is spread with Joy & Humor.

I think the fact Craig Narrates his own memoir adds a layer of excellence that keeps you engaged from the start to finish, absolutely loved it.

This is Craig Ferguson in his element. Bearing all in his autobiography was incredibly touching and hilarious. Loved listening to it.

Just read it

I appreciate any audiobook performed by the author. And I appreciate the how genuinely Craig has carried himself. I am in awe of the practicality of his Scottish family's love for each other, it shows strong security in their identity. Craig is entertaining as usual, and I found this book to be a very satisfying read.

Great listen.

Craig is a legend and its interesting to know how he got to where he is. its a roller coaster of story and it amazes me how much he achieved even with his problems. It taught me that a great personality can over come so many other flaws.

Only for Ferguson fans - no depth of narrative

I like Craig, he is a good man i think. But the book is basically just him rambling on about how he had an alcohol problem and went to many bars and then got lucky in hollywood. Nothing you didnt know. I couldnt find any wisdom or real depth of narrative. Just a dude trying to fix his alcohol issues but he has not provided any real value on how to deal with life or anything more interesting than getting over a breakup and envisioning yourself in hollywood. Its one alcohol story after another, and its not even funny stories, and he happens to have a lot of luck getting support from people and being good looking. As i said, he seems like a decent guy, but just doesnt have much depth. Also, i think he may come across as a player, but in reality, to women he is that 'good looking joker', and he is the one getting played by girls most of his life. This is not anything I would read if you want to learn from someone's life, it is more for people who want to be entertained by short snippets of shallow unfascinating alcohol stories.
