About this listen

Before he was considered a CIA superagent, before he was thought of as a terrorist's worst nightmare, and before he was both loathed and admired by the politicians on Capitol Hill, Mitch Rapp was a gifted college athlete without a care in the world...and then tragedy struck.

Two decades of cutthroat partisan politics has left the CIA and the country in an increasingly vulnerable position. Cold War veteran and CIA operations director Thomas Stansfield knows he must prepare his people for the next war. The rise of Islamic terrorism is coming, and it needs to be met abroad before it reaches America's shores. Stansfield directs his protégé, Irene Kennedy, and his old Cold War colleague Stan Hurley to form a new group of clandestine operatives who will work outside the normal chain of command - men who do not exist.

What type of man is willing to kill for his country without putting on a uniform? Kennedy finds him in the wake of the Pan Am Lockerbie terrorist attack. Two-hundred and seventy souls perished that cold December night, and thousands of family and friends were left searching for comfort. Mitch Rapp was one of them, but he was not interested in comfort. He wanted retribution.

Six months of intense training has prepared him to bring the war to the enemy's doorstep, and he does so with brutal efficiency. Rapp starts in Istanbul, where he assassinates the Turkish arms dealer who sold the explosives used in the Pan Am attack. Rapp then moves on to Hamburg with his team and across Europe, leaving a trail of bodies. All roads lead to Beirut, though, and what Rapp doesn't know is that the enemy is aware of his existence and has prepared a trap. The hunter is about to become the hunted, and Rapp will need every ounce of skill and cunning if he is to survive the war-ravaged city and its various terrorist factions.

Includes the first chapter from Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills' latest thriller, Enemy of the State!

It’s a good book with some minor personal issues

I’ll keep this short. The writing is well done and the characters are memorable, distinct and likeable.

I was looking for something a bit more realistic than this. For what it is, the story reads like fiction, not like it was written by somebody who’s ‘been there, done that’ like the Billy Billingham’s Matt Mason series.

Even though it’s a bit less real, it’s still an enjoyable read.

On the narrator, I think they could’ve used a different guy. He’s really great, don’t get me wrong and this was recorded a long time ago. There may not have been other options. If I had to recast it, I would’ve picked a much younger, more ‘Hollywood’ style narrator. The guy would be perfect for a fantasy novel but it’s not great for a modern spy thriller.

Anyway, it’s worth a read. Author and narrator have really made their best effort.

Non-stop action

This isn't my usual type of book but it was very enjoyable. George Guidall narrated Neil Gaiman's American Gods, so I knew, and liked, his style. Mitch is an enjoyable character and there's action aplenty of course.

Glorious

Great action with great characters and an amazing narrator. Worth it for the unusual and improbably hilarious torture scene.

Overall an enjoyable listen

First Vince Flynn book I've listened to. Good spy / assassin story albeit with a somewhat predictable ending.

Will definitely try the second book in the series.

American assassin

Decent writing but the story can jump in places. Maybe a slightly dumbed down version of Tom Clancy but still a nice read. Likeable narration but probably better as a film script for the upcoming film.

Meh

I think I probably would have enjoyed the book a lot more with a different narrator. While he has a great voice it's definitely for a different genre and older character than the main one in this story. I found it hard to get past this and absorbed in a young action character to truly enjoy the story. Test drive the sample to see if the narrator works for you before purchasing
