About this listen

Hawaii has a secret. It is a dark and terrible thing. It involves racism, hate crimes, and brain washing. Hawaiians have been isolated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for centuries. First contact with foreigners happened in 1778. Hawaii became a unified kingdom, through war, in the early 1800s. His Majesty, King Kamehameha "the great" conquered the eight largest islands in the Hawaiian archipelago.

The speedy decline of the Hawaiian race began when King Kamehameha "the great" died. He died in 1819. After he died, the religious system and law design was abolished. Hawaii was a nation with millions in 1800. Rule of the new kingdom went to young chief after young chief. The inexperience of Kamehameha's predecessors added to the genocide of Hawaii. This, along with, the arrival of the first Christian missionaries, pounded the nail further into the hands of the Hawaiian nation.

The missionaries were sent from Boston in 1819. They arrived in Kona, Hawaii in 1820. Their mission was to convert the natives to Christianity, build schools, stores, churches, and develop a monetary value system. To everyone's surprise, there was no religion to convert. The first time in the history of the world a nation has been overthrown without the use of war. Slowly more and more power was being stripped from the Kings.

Until, finally, in 1863 the Kingdom of Hawaii was overthrown by the original Boston missionaries' sons. Hawaii has been forgotten ever since. Find out what it was like growing up in a time of revitalization.
