About this listen
There were a dozen witnesses to Denny Tran’s brutal murder in a busy Sydney restaurant. So how come no one saw anything?
‘Just let him go.’ Those are words Ky Tran will forever regret. The words she spoke when her parents called to ask if they should let her younger brother Denny out to celebrate his high school graduation. That night in 1996, Denny – optimistic, guileless, brilliant Denny – is brutally murdered inside a busy restaurant in Cabramatta, a Sydney suburb facing violent crime, an indifferent police force, and the worst heroin epidemic in Australian history.
Returning home for the funeral, Ky learns that the police are stumped by her brother’s case: several people were at Lucky 8 restaurant when Denny died, but each of the bystanders claim to have seen nothing.
As an antidote to grief and guilt, Ky is determined to track down the witnesses herself. With each encounter, she peels away another layer of the place that shaped her and Denny, exposing the trauma and seeds of violence that were planted well before that fateful celebration dinner: by colonialism, by the war in Vietnam, and by the choices they’ve all made to survive.
Tracey Lien's extraordinary debut pulls apart the intricate bonds of friendship, family, culture and community that produced a devastating crime. All That's Left Unsaid is both a study of the effects of inherited trauma and social discrimination, and a compulsive literary thriller that expertly holds the listener in its grip until the very end.

"This novel will make you travel through time: to an embattled Australia in 1996, to a youth shaped by your parents' pain, to the day after the biggest mistake of your life. Tracey Lien's story pulls you back twenty years, then pushes you, heartbroken and stunned, into today's bright light. All That’s Left Unsaid is honest, aching and filled with beauty. It will transport you." (Julia Phillips, internationally bestselling author of Disappearing Earth)
"A story of great grief and even greater love, this beautiful and powerful book will break you open and change you inside." (Alice Pung OAM, One Hundred Days)

A fresh new voice
Thanks Tracey Lien for the great read (listen). So wonderful to have a truthful voice from Cabramatta Vietnamese perspective. Funny. Sad. Poignant.

Tender, funny and haunting story
Lien has a contemporary Australian voice, funny, irreverent and uncompromising in its honesty. The story’s simplicity belies its complex themes of identity, generational trauma and finding peace/home. Highly recommended.

I really loved this book- it made it so clear that Sydney is a a ‘tale of two cities’.
I finished this book very fast as I found it so compelling. I live in Sydney and have visited Cabramatta many times, but this book took me ‘inside’ the Vietnamese community there and helped me begin to understand what it’s like for some migrants and descendants who straddle both worlds- the old and the new. I’m first generation Aussie/ Irish myself - and had no idea how tough life is on other migrants and their communities.
Beautifully written with a well structured plot about childhood friendship and growing up apart. The murder of the main character’s 17 year old innocent brother is heart breaking and discovering the truth takes all she’s got- but it’s worth it.
A wonderful read.

Brilliant and captivating portrayal of life for immigrants
A beautiful novel that depicts race politics and the experience of immigrants very realistically. I really enjoyed the various character portrayals and the audiobook overall.

Compelling story
Good story , sad honest reflective , held my interest and gave some insight into the state of being, for a sector of migrants in Australia in the 70 s to 90 s . How oblivious we as Australian born caucasians can be to those around us not with origins similar to our own as we interact in the superficial banal ways of everyday living . I like stories such as this that try to bridge us to some understanding.
