Publisher's Summary
‘I have always known that to be hot is to be powerful. For most of my life, I just took it as the way things are, a fact not worth interrogating since it’s so obviously true.’
Up until her twenty-fifth birthday, the number one priority in Lucinda Price’s life was to look good. She nipped, tucked, cut, plucked, shaved, tanned, crunched, squatted and starved. Then, she broke down.
All I Ever Wanted Was to Be Hot is a funny, provocative retrospective on the last thirty years of Western beauty standards. From the Pussycat Dolls to Victoria’s Secret, The Girls of the Playboy Mansion to Lara Bingle, the media of the 2000s was littered with high profile examples of hotness as the highest form of social currency. Is it any wonder a girl growing up in that era might believe “good looks” were as integral to womanhood as having a pulse?
With her offbeat humour and incisive cultural commentary, Lucinda tells the unfiltered story of a young woman overcoming an eating disorder, illuminating our enduring obsession with appearance by holding a mirror up to herself, and in turn, all of us.
A hilarious, insightful deep dive into self image, desirability, pop-culture and power. A sparkling debut by one of Australia’s most beloved creators and comedians, Lucinda Price aka Froomes.
Critic Reviews
‘A book for the modern woman, laced with unflinching, glorious honesty.’ Zara McDonald and Michelle Andrews, co-founders of Shameless Media
‘A funny, real interrogation of Australia’s body image problem, and a call to arms to dismantle diet culture.’ Chantelle Otten, author and sexologist
‘A feminist manifesto, a younger millennial gospel, with unparalleled candour and self awareness. I inhaled this book – it’s going to be big.’ Jessie Stephens
‘Brilliant, funny and brutally honest, this is a must-read for anyone trying to navigate through this incredibly complex, image-obsessed age.’ Myf Warhurst
‘If Tina Fey and David Sedaris had a child, it would be a book … this book.’ Ryan Shelton
‘My book of the year. Whip-smart. Hilarious. Honest … Lucinda is a genius who captures and melds the deeply serious and deeply funny in a way few writers can.’ Hannah Ferguson

THANK YOU LUCINDA
I think I finished listening to this book in about two days. Completely enthralled by how relatable, serious but also satire it was. This book has held a mirror up to my behaviours around self image and I hope it will change the lives of so many women’s ideals like it has mine. WE ARE ALL SO HOT

Brilliant Lucinda
Lucinda is brilliant in expressing herself and raising awareness for so many important things. I admire her matureness at what I would consider a young age. She has so much to offer the world with her experiences, and writing capabilities. I have no doubt that she will be helping so many people. I will follow her career with admiration. Go LUCINDA 💜🫶

Honesty is hot!
An authentically told tour through the author’s past including her preoccupation with her appearance, the cosmetic changes she made, and her eating disorder. Her recovery and new zest for life is, well, hot. Thanks Froomy for a great listen, your voice has so much character and I really enjoyed it.

Gripping, witty, honest
Finished in 24 hours as I could not put it down. It was captivating, honest, informative, painfully relatable and funny. This is a must-read for young women everywhere. It makes you rethink your own relationship with hotness and its relentless pursuit.

Honest and entertaining
Well, actually, idk how honest froomes was but it felt like she was being super honest. It was such an entertaining read, I couldn’t wait to get back to listening to her tell her story. I enjoyed the critical lens applied to specifically australian beauty standards with her analysis of how Oz responded as a whole, kinda, to Lara Bingle. Honestly, so much in here, too much to include in a review, but do yourself a favour and read it. Ps I am sorry but I had never heard of Froomes before this.

Girls can be funny AND clever!
Initially read because I have followed Froomes’ on Instagram for years, and am obsessed with her comedic talent. After finishing the book I’ve been gifted her experience in such a raw and genuine way it has led me to reflect on my own behaviours with less shame and guilt. Love your work Froo-mami
