About this listen

‘I have always known that to be hot is to be powerful. For most of my life, I just took it as the way things are, a fact not worth interrogating since it’s so obviously true.’

Up until her twenty-fifth birthday, the number one priority in Lucinda Price’s life was to look good. She nipped, tucked, cut, plucked, shaved, tanned, crunched, squatted and starved. Then, she broke down.

All I Ever Wanted Was to Be Hot is a funny, provocative retrospective on the last thirty years of Western beauty standards. From the Pussycat Dolls to Victoria’s Secret, The Girls of the Playboy Mansion to Lara Bingle, the media of the 2000s was littered with high profile examples of hotness as the highest form of social currency. Is it any wonder a girl growing up in that era might believe “good looks” were as integral to womanhood as having a pulse?

With her offbeat humour and incisive cultural commentary, Lucinda tells the unfiltered story of a young woman overcoming an eating disorder, illuminating our enduring obsession with appearance by holding a mirror up to herself, and in turn, all of us.

A hilarious, insightful deep dive into self image, desirability, pop-culture and power. A sparkling debut by one of Australia’s most beloved creators and comedians, Lucinda Price aka Froomes.

Honesty is hot!

An authentically told tour through the author’s past including her preoccupation with her appearance, the cosmetic changes she made, and her eating disorder. Her recovery and new zest for life is, well, hot. Thanks Froomy for a great listen, your voice has so much character and I really enjoyed it.

It’s time to rethink what’s HOT

This is the book I never knew I needed. Froomes’ writing is smart, honest and heartfelt, as well as funny AF. Her well-researched chapters often made me literally stop what I was doing and re-examine my values on what constitutes beauty and health. Will 💯recommend this book to all my friends, no matter their “BMI”.

Thought provoking and hilarious

As someone who also grew up in the era of girls next door I found this very relatable. I’m so glad I listened to this over reading it as and tone in which Lucinda speaks adds and extra layer. Can’t wait to hear what she comes up with next!

it's relatable on so many levels!

Whether or not you have ever wanted to get injectables or surgery or just plain and simply lose weight, you can relate to this lady in some way. If you just think your appearance will make you have more or less friends, this is relatable. I have not ever had an eating disorder but I struggle with my weight and have used pharmaceutical drugs to try and aid weight loss, and it made me so sick. I didnt realise how bad it was on one specific drug, until I needed to have a colonoscopy and the drug prevented me from having it due to its side effects preventing the prep from working. I went off the drug the week before my colonoscopy and felt so much better.. I took it again after and all the side effects hit me quicker than the first time. That's when I realised just what my partner and family had been seeing and why my partner had said to me that he was scared I would kill myself I'm pursuit to become "hot" when he loved me the way I was. Why my 6 year old daughter had cried in my arms so many times because she was scared of how sick mummy was.
This book made me shake my head because I couldn't believe how someone could do this or that to themselves, nod because I have been there too, laugh, cry and most of all, reflect on myself. I will be listening to this again and again.. as a good reminder that looks are NOT everything but our personalities ARE. That people love the smile on my face more than how skinny my cheeks are. That they love my jokes and laugh, more than the size written on my clothes tag.

Very Relatable, heartwarming and super interesting

Although I was a teenager a few years above Lucinda, this book is so relatable to being a teen in the 2000’s and it’s very heartwarming to hear her tell her story from the other side of it all now.
