About this listen
A 2024 BOOK OF THE YEAR PICK FOR BBC R4 OPEN BOOK, THE OBSERVER, GQ, GRAZIA, HERO, I-D, NYLON
A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, beds down in a nondescript motel and immerses herself in a temporary reinvention that turns out to be the start of an entirely different journey.
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic and domestic life of a 45-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectations while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman. Once again, July hijacks the familiar and turns it into something new and thrillingly, profoundly alive.

So honest and original
I am so glad this book exists! Its honesty is so refreshing I want to hug Miranda for having the guts to strip away all the layers we hide behind. An amazing book!

Fully whackadoodle
Whilst there were a number of quotes and series of dialogue about perimenopause and menopause that really struck me, this is a woman completely unhinged.

A profoundly different take on aging as a woman
Miranda July has written something so moving and human and exceptional with All Fours that I feel a little bereft reaching the end.
As a woman of a similar age, it’s refreshing to read a tale about the midpoint of a woman’s life that is positive and uncertain yet hopeful.
I couldn’t put it down.

Comic inquest!
This is exquisitely read by MJ and coats the bitter gritty pill of dawning menopause in a sweet comic overlay. It is a courageous investigation of non monogamous non conformational open relationships and a shameless celebration of love.

Never read anything like it
Amazing! Shocking at times, but also giving voice to thoughts I had no idea other women experienced!

Hedonism at its highest
This unique story is confronting & highly entertaining. If you enjoy immersing yourself in hedonism, this is the book for you.
I love listening to books read by the author & Miranda July really brought it.

It's weird and modern and I loved it
I loved this so much, I didn't want it to stop. I loved Miranda reading it too. I’m a long time MJ fan and felt so connected to her telling the story.
A few of the moments in the story I found a little too contrived, too corny to be true but I had to keep telling myself it was fiction and I just let it go.
I found so much in it to inspire me and I walked away from it feeling energised about thoughts or ideas that I have based around my creativity. I connected to the hormone stuff and the relationship stuff. I love the way she unpacked characters and personalities and all the words that make you feel that you are in the room, in the moment, fully immersed in the story. Overall, it’s a very modern story told in a very modern way.
