About this listen

Five years after the events of Date Night on Union Station, Kelly has settled into married life and her job as the EarthCent ambassador. The only fly in the ointment is that most of the aliens on Union Station refuse to talk to her. But a mysterious new game is sweeping the galaxy, changing the balance of power between species and bringing game-savvy humans front-and-center.

As the invitations to diplomatic functions pour in, Kelly finds herself struggling to understand exactly what's going on, not to mention finding babysitters on short notice. Fortunately, diplomats and alcohol go together like, well, diplomats and alcohol, and Joe has started a micro-brewery business in Mac's Bones. The only thing left that could go wrong is a visit from her mother.

I'm not sure if I'm just not paying close enough attention, but I find myself zoning out during long parts about cross species trade deals and the overarching trading game technicalities. Maybe this book just needs more brain cells than I'm currently alotting to it? Might be better read than in audio? But it's still an amusing world and I appreciate that the author assumes the reader is intelligent enough to care about economics and building space ships. I'm just finding it demanding and boring at the same time. And for some reason now Kelly is always one step behind where in the first novel she was refreshingly intelligent. There's a total absence of depth to Joe and Kelly's relationship and weird clunks that feel like missing a chapter (why is she now liking her mother visiting?). The first book had promise, the second didn't live up to it.
