About this listen

Captain Jacob Thomas, USMC, is a divorced combat veteran just trying to get his life back on track. Returning to the marine corps after a failed attempt at reconciliation with his estranged wife, Jake volunteers for a DARPA experiment that catapults him into a future where humanity has been stripped of 200 years of technological advancements and more than half its population. With the help of a faceless benefactor named Alice, he escapes the confines of an abandoned lab facility and starts a journey to put Earth back on a path to recovery. Jake's path begins in the rich farmlands of central California and eventually places him in orbit and face to face with the very evil that started it all.

Post Apocalyptic Base Building

There's an interesting world building here that was certainly intriguing and where the author spends most of his time, describing the technologies, mechanisms and geography. A lot of the personal relationships and personal growth of the characters is skipped in favour of this more analytical approach and there was enough time between mentions of a few people that I was often lost on who was who, so not a lot of deep investment is formed here. Again though, the plot moves at a good pace, the narration is good and the world is interesting enough that I'd like to see where the story goes next.

Harem sci fi

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The writing is terrible. I don't know how old the author is but i can only assume he is a teenager that never had an editor go over the book. Its beyond me how it became an audio book.

Would you ever listen to anything by Charles Lamb again?

No, he cant write worth a damn.

The main character spends a decent amount of time arguing with the women about how he never wanted to create a harem and is 'uncomfortable' with it happening. I can only assume the author wrote this in to try and imply that the main character is a decent moral person who was pushed into the situation because the women all fell in love with him and just want to make babies with him-as well as how he can justly have a semblance of a relationship with each one based on the grounds that he is moral and not taking advantage of them. Its ridiculous. A teenagers sci-fi wet dream.

What aspect of David Drummond’s performance might you have changed?

His vocal inflections and ques are a bit of a mess and monotone.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Nope.

Any additional comments?

It just makes me sad that this book actually got through publishing. Sure - OK, if it wasn't so poorly written it wouldn't be quite so bad, but i'm so sick of the 'just and moral' hero who needs to be seen as good by everyone. One dimensional characters all around

This is the first audible book that I could not finish , the writer barely bothers naming women mostly just the blonde the busty auburn haired women etc .
Some idiots one man and his many women wet dream , do not bother with this soft porn/romance Novel - total waste of time and money

Really?

Calling it a poorly written teenage wet dream is giving it too much credit.

Terrible plot justification for the main character to have a polygamist relationships with every young attractive female character. Its bad enough that it barely contribute to the plot, but half way through the book this flimsy justification is undermined so it's not needed at all.... I'd reccomend it as a romance novel but it lacks plot depth.

Cpt America and his Harem

Ok so I was expecting a top selling sci-fi but instead I get a pandering poorly written teenage wet dream.
The narrator was ok but no way near as good as say Simon Vance.

If you want to read some decent sci-fi steer clear of this book and instead try something by Jack Campbell, Peter Clines or James S. A. Corey.
