نجمة يسافر وراءها فريد رمضان... خياله يتأبط فكرة الموت... فكرة الملاك التي يستل الروح... يعيث خياله ويلعب معه تلك اللعبة... لتكشف أحداثها عن حقيقة الإنسان الذي ما زال في تساؤلات وتصورات عن تلك الحقيقة المسكونة بخوف وبحذر في أعماقه.سارة الصبية الصغيرة التي تعمل مع أبيها في حفار القبور بل مع عائلتها وجيرانها،وكل هؤلاء يعملون بهذه المهنة الرهيبة.تقدم الراوية سارة أباها وهو يعمل في المقبرة ومع كل حفرة جديدة قصة قصيرة،تتناول الرواية قصة موت سلمان الوحش الذي كان يعمل جزاراَ حيث يقوم بنحر الحيوانات وينهي حياتها بالموت الذي تفر منه الحيوانات كما الأنسان،ثم تأتي الراوية على ذكر وفاة جارتهم شريفة التي كانت تعمل أيضاً في نفس المهنة وهي تنتظر وفاة أي امرأة في المحرق،والتي كانت تقضي معظم النهار مع الأم،تروي سارة مشهداً كاملاً في كيفية موتها وغسلها.وهي التي كانت تُغسل النساء،وبهذا جاء السرد في الرواية يقيم الحدود ويمحوها بين الخيال والتاريخ،بين الحلم والواقع،بين الذات والآخر،بين الموت والحياة،والوجود والعدم،تماماً كما يفعل البرزخ.
