فهناك صورة واحدة حاول كل من لم يعرفوه تصديرها لنا، هي أنه رجل عبوس ينتج الضحك ولا يستهلكه، ويتحدث عن البسطاء ولا يقترب منهم! وهذه الصورة لم تفارق خيالي، وأنا في الطريق من بيتي إلى دار أخبار اليوم.

فقد ذهبت إليه وأنا أعرف أن دخول مكتبه "حدث" والحديث معه "انفراد"، وتسجيل حوار له يدخل ضمن دائرة التسجيلات النادرة، لكن شيطان الصحافة احترق بمجرد أن وقفت عند باب مكتبه. وجدت رجلاً يجمع بين حكمة الفيلسوف، وخفة دم المضحك، وتواضع العالم، ورؤية المفكر، وشهامة ابن البلد.. وعرفت السبب في الصورة العبثية التي رسمها له من لم يعرفوه! فهو رجل يجيد التحكم في عضلات وجهه فلا يضحك إلا عندما يكون في صحبة أصدقائه، ولا يستقبل في مكتبه إلا من يشعر بصدقه مهما كان موقعه، فيجلس مع النشال ولا يقابل الوزير، ويصافح الرجل البسيط ولا يلتفت إلى المسؤول الكبير. فهو رجل صنعته الكتابة، لا الدعاية لما يكتبه، فيمكن ببساطة أن تحصر عدد الحوارات الصحفية والتليفزيونية التي أجريت معه على مدى نصف قرن، ورغم ذلك ظل الكاتب الأكثر تأثيراً- مثلما وصفته الصحف الأجنبية- وكتبه ظلت الأكثر مبيعاً لدرجة أن وكالة "رويترز" قالت إنها "تباع كالحلاوة في الأسواق"، وذلك عندما وصلت مبيعات كتاب "أي كلام" إلى 90 ألف نسخة في عام 1990.
