About this listen

Legends aren't born. They're forged.

Dug Sealskinner is a down-on-his-luck mercenary travelling south to join up with King Zadar's army. But he keeps rescuing the wrong people. First, Spring, a child he finds scavenging on the battlefield, and then Lowa, one of Zadar's most fearsome warriors, who's vowed revenge on the king for her sister's execution.

Now Dug's on the wrong side of that thousands-strong army he hoped to join - and worse, Zadar has bloodthirsty druid magic on his side. All Dug has is his war hammer, one rescued child, and one unpredictable, highly-trained warrior with a lust for revenge that's going to get them all killed.... It's a glorious day to die.

Editorial reviews

Age of Iron is book 1 in the hugely popular audiobook series Iron Age Trilogy by highly-acclaimed fantasy writer Angus Watson and narrated by English actor Sean Barrett. This spectacular series is a feast of iron-fuelled battles, evil, bloodshed and lust. Dug Sealskinner the travelling mercenary has joined forces with a child and a dangerously revengeful warrior to take on the entire army of King Zadar. They are unprepared and unarmed – death is imminent. The twists in this story are phenomenal and the writing is exceptional. This is a pulse-quickening saga where only dark magic holds the key to survival. Available now from Audible.

Another Winner

Awesome first book of a trilogy, I can't wait to get the next one. Excellent narration, good humour, good story, characters I could invest in emotionally, I loved it from the first page to the last!

a wonderful story of medieval Britain..

i started off on the fence on this one..
early on in the book, the pace of introducing new characters left me unsure who was who
but it eventually finds its feet, delivering a suspense filled drama around the fear of Rome arriving and who will rule in their time of invasion.

Very listenable.

Very good fare, without being great. As a fan of sword and sandals novels this novel is very much better than most. I am not into fantasy (as a teen, yes) and whilst the novel is infused with fantasy elements they are not overly unbelievable and are perhaps elemental in the age of Druid's.

The narrator is excellent as always and a delight to listen too.

One criticism is that with 112 chapters it can be hard to follow particulary with so many characters and there "out there" names. The novel stutters too quickly between scenes and the climax seems to be left too raw before the next chapter. The fight scenes are perhaps a little stunted and brief. Iggulden, Mr Watson is not, but he makes a very good attempt..

I will read more of his work as the period fascinates me, the story is intriguing and the narrator sublime.

Brilliant

As a bit of an ancient history buff, this book even though not a history book really got me invested.
Dry humour had me in fits of laughter, passers by must have thought me crazy😂.
I am loving this series, the narrator is definitely the icing on the cake in the way he brings it to life.👍👍👍

Clever, imaginative and fascinating, if sometimes a bit too gory

Great book, and terrifically well-realized characters. Also quite funny in places which I greatly appreciated, but some of the violence is hard to listen to, particularly the various forms of torture described in great detail.

Not what I was expecting

I brought the Audio book expecting that it would be a serious fiction but got a hilarious re telling of history instead. The narrator could've done a better job but over all enjoyable listening.
