About this listen

Winter blankets the land, and more than just hope has died. Prevented from invading the Fhrey homeland by the tower of Avempartha, the western army seeks a way across the Nidwalden River before the fane obtains the secret of dragons. As time runs out for both humanity and the mystic Suri, the only chance for the living rests with the dead. Having made their fateful choice, can a handful of misfits do the impossible, or are they forever lost to an inescapable grave? Do gods truly exist? Is it possible to know the future? And what lies beyond the veil of death?

In the tradition of Virgil’s Aeneid, Dante’s Divine Comedy, and Milton’s Paradise Lost, the most epic of tales transcend the world of the living. It’s time to see what lies in Elan’s Age of Death.

From Michael J. Sullivan (New York Times, USA Today, and Washington Post best-selling author), comes the second to the last installment in the epic fantasy series, Legends of the First Empire. The series chronicles a pivotal point in Elan’s history when humans rise against the Fhrey who they once saw as gods. Set 3,000 years before the Riyria tales, Legends is a stand-alone fantasy series which is independent of all other Elan stories. That said, if you do listen to the other books, you’ll see lies revealed and the truth about historical figures unmasked.

Must read!

Fantastic as always. Both the story and narration are excellent, and the author's intro gives a great insight into the writing process.

Entertaining story by one of my favourite authors

Michael is the author of one of my all-time favourite books, The Crown Tower, the first of his I read and have re-read a number of times since.

The Legend series is a very good multi-thread tale following an interesting set of characters who play with your emotions.
It's full of heroism, humour, intrigue and moments of surprise, without the unnecessary gratuitous violence found in Game of Thrones.

I recommend new younger readers start with the Legend series, whereas new adult readers should start with the two Riyria series as I consider them excellent (higher standard).

It's nice to have someone read you the story and frees you up to do other things if you need to, like housework or exercise. Thought Tim did a good job but feel the story is more suited to a younger narrator.

Thanks heaps Michael, much appreciated!

No time to change scenery

This is an amazing series and I adore listening to it, but I found myself getting lost several times when there was insufficient gaps between scenes, paragraphs or chapters. Still worth the listen

Sorry - not happy

Don't get me wrong- I really love this writer and the narrator BUT this book does not belong in the series. The story is the problem. Want to tell the origin/redemption story for the Gods? Do it- but in another book series, please. Want to include a nod or two to W of Oz or Dante's Inferno - great, but just not here! The book feels off and it is off- it's on another tangent with the story and characters we have come to know and love. I loved the series thus far for the characters developed in books 1-4. It's about the war between elves and humans and how N came into power- so why go off into another world to tell a different story? Why tell the story of the Gods here? It doesn't belong, and so much of it read like a textbook. BORING. Even if it's how our characters get the horn, just touch briefly on it and get back to the main storyline. The Gods and afterlife world is just another book altogether and it blurs and ruins the storyline for most of our beloved characters. It's like taking LoTR characters and putting them in a greek tragedy or Star wars. No. Just no.
