Publisher's Summary
Something is rotten in the state of California....
The dawning civil war has ended in a truce. Scavengers and traders all over the country are settling down for the long, hard winter to come. With their new camp outside the maze of New Angeles at the coast growing every day, Bree, Nate, and the gang have their hands full - yet something is not quite right. Maybe one last run before the winter is all that's needed to cure that itch. What could possibly go wrong?

I love this series
I’ve found this series incredibly addictive in the best possible way. But now I’m crashing because I need more.
I’ve read & listened to a lot of zombie books, and sadly many of them have failed to hold my interest. But not this series. I really enjoy the fast pace of the story that holds my attention. I also enjoy the way that insignificant moments early on (sometimes in previous books of the series) end up having been early clues to a sinister plot brewing away in the background that ends up being monumental later on.
I’m also a sucker for strong, smart, kick-ass female heroine’s. I particularly like the fact that Bree’s looks or sex appeal are not a factor, and it’s her strength, resilience and intelligence that gets her to where she is.
It’s pretty brutal in Bree’s post zombie virus outbreak world, but she rose to the challenge to become a dominant player in her new reality. I really enjoyed her character development from the start of book 1 in the Greenfields Biotech labs where it all began. So not a book I’d recommend to anyone who can’t stomach violence in novels. Although there’s always a point to it. Nor would I recommend it to anyone looking for a romance novel. But if you like fast paced zombie books with a strong, smart female lead character, then start with book 1 and enjoy listening to the entire series.
My one small gripe (and it really is very minor, as it doesn’t affect the storyline) is that at the start of the series (we’ll really before the series began), Bree was in a relationship with a woman. But without getting into detail (spoilers), once the zombie apocalypse began, it wasn’t too long before Bree was in a relationship with a man. Sure, she was always bi. And the writer goes to great lengths to demonstrate that Bree is ultimately stronger (not necessarily physically, but generally) and more capable than any man, it still irks me a little that when the you know what hit the fan, Bree ended up with a man. But really, it’s a tiny complaint as it’s such a minor part of the story. Overall, I’ve absolutely loved this series and I can’t wait for the next installment.
Also, the narrator is great. I even forget it’s a female voice doing the male parts she so good. I know immediately which character is speaking by the narrators change of tone or accent, which all helps to get lost in the story and in Bree’s world.
