Hard truth that you need to hear

This book really help me to understand my situation. I was lost and unsure of the future and therefore impossible to know or understand the next steps. The book gives a high level of understanding of what is to come, likely scenarios and emotional roller coasters. What is a toxic person and the forms of manipulation and abuse.

Insightful, moving and reassuring

I’m going to have to listen to this again for all the times my brain went off on a “that’s exactly what my sister/mother/ father do when I try to explain/do etc…”

But I’m reassured. I’m not being dramatic, over sensitive or insensitive. I’m trying to draw boundaries. I’m trying to get the respect I deserve. I shouldn’t have to put on a face, I’m done people pleasing. I’m done being the one who has to let go and take the blame and apologise when they should apologise to me. But they never do…

A must read for those who want to feel validated, listened to and understood when subjected to toxic family members.

This book by Shellie has resonated with me. She eloquently describes the suffering she had in toxic family situations and turns it around so that you become empowered by her experiences and your new learning helps you to be and feel validated and worthy. Thank you for your writing this book. It is a gift.

Validating

What I learnt was validating of the actions I’ve instinctively taken to set my boundaries. It has helped me understand my emotions.

Disappointing

Although the story was good, and I believe it is quite genuine, it is only one side. There is always two sides to every story.
My heart goes out to the author and her feelings, but having seen, and felt what it feels like to be on the other side of this story; it is also soul, destroying to have someone disconnect from you.
You can live private life without disconnecting from your family, minimising contact and keeping things simple. Publicly disconnecting, or privately for that matter hurts everyone and the pain never goes away.
Distancing Is a better way of managing family.
Disconnection destroys everyone’s soul .
