About this listen

When your parents are pathologically self-centered, manipulative, or emotionally abusive, the pain they cause is deep and often difficult to put into words. You may experience anxiety, depression, complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD), low self-esteem, addiction, or other mental health conditions as an adult. But it was not your fault, and there are tools you can use to heal the trauma caused by your childhood.

This compassionate guide will help you gain a greater understanding of what happened in your past; transform deep pain into emotional resilience; and build the loving, meaningful relationship with yourself that you deserve. You'll also learn to set boundaries with others, assert your needs, and overcome emotional avoidance to develop warm, loving relationships with others.

Author Sherrie Campbell offers powerful skills drawn from a range of evidence-based treatments, including mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), self-compassion, lived experience, and body-based practices to help you heal from the past and reconnect with your authentic self.

Let this book guide you on the path to healing, wholeness, and self-discovery.

Powerful

Conceptualised toxic home environments perfectly. Lots of great coping strategies for healing and moving forward. As a therapist myself, definitely one I'll recommend to my clients but also very useful for my own lived experience.

Excellent

Reading this felt as though I was reading my own personal story. I read it twice in a week to make sure I didn’t miss anything, I found myself taking notes as there were so many great points to help me express to others (who love me in a healthy way) what I experienced as each thing in isolation seems so small and insignificant but really it’s a snowball. Thank you for this book 🥰

Crucial to your healing

I’m so impressed with this book! I just adore Dr Sherrie and greatly admire her ability to read her own books so beautifully. This one is just as beautifully written as her previous books. I’ve been listening to it for much of the day as I recuperate from major surgery. It’s raw! I’ve been in tears crying my heart out as Dr Sherrie describes all the awful things these parents do as I relive my own experiences and fret over the mistakes I made early in my parenting journey. It’s a book you’ll need to keep close. Refer to over and over and if you can get a physical copy to highlight and dog ear. Dr Sherrie is brilliant! She’s been pinnacle in my own journey of separation from the parents I never want to be like. I’m 48 and have been in no man’s land for 7 years and will likely be here for a good while. This book has shown me that I have stalled in my healing but am still moving forward at a snail’s pace. This book is armed with tips and tricks to kick start the pace again and I’m so looking forward to my further healing. It’s not good to be stuck and the last thing you want is to be bitter. God bless you Dr Sherrie for sharing your knowledge and your gifts with us, your brave hearts. You are absolutely wonderful!
