About this listen
Dacen Becker: New guy in town. Wants to finish high school as peacefully as possible. No angst, no drama, play soccer, make some new friends.
As one of the only hipster-clothes-wearing, luxury-vehicle-driving teenagers in a sea of plaid, camouflage, and loud souped up trucks, he unfortunately sticks out like a sore thumb at Knoxton Falls High School.
Lucky for him, he’s a handsome, fun-loving guy with a heart of gold that everyone warms up to quickly. Well, almost everyone...but Dacen’s not one to back down from a challenge.
And when that challenge comes in the form of one hot boy with the body of a god and the lips of a sinner? That drama-free senior year goes up in a pouf of smoke before it even begins.
Ryne Sutton: Grouchy. Aloof. Sexy but kind of a jerk. These are the words most people would use to describe him. And that’s the way he’d like to keep it.
He’s spent nearly half his life keeping his shields up, and has no plans of removing them now. His priority is a kick-ass soccer season and preparing for a future in the sport.
Then the new guy crosses his path at tryouts and repeatedly afterwards. He doesn’t like him, wants nothing to do with him, yet can’t help watching for Becker around every corner.
Even if it’s just to give him a few verbal punches and scorching glares, Ryne’s empty shell of a heart flickers whenever he’s near.

Great!
Really enjoyed this . The way Dacen gets under the hard shell of Ryne is enchanting.
Jacob is a terrific narrator .
Just can't believe a woman writer can understand the male sexual response so well.
( am I allowed to say that?)

Enjoyable teen / sports romance!
Senior at Knoxton Falls High GA, Ryne Sutton’s default emotion is ‘grumpy’. He has a lot to be grumpy about - after the death of his father, his mother abandoned Ryne and his younger sister and they’re being raised by an uncle and aunt - needless to say he has trust and abandonment issues. His mood is not improved by the arrival of a new senior, Dacen (rhymes with Jason) Becker, whom Ryne fell out with during the summer soccer camp. Both guys are on the Knoxton Knights soccer team and things just got awkward. I enjoyed this grumpy/sunshine teen romance; it has a strong YA feel with lots of the story set in the school, but is definitely not PG13. This felt longer than it needed to be because of the teen drama. Understandably the guys don’t have their acts together: Ryne is continually hot and cold towards Dacen, while Dacen suffers from anxiety and panic attacks which he keeps to himself. I felt like the author captured the guys’ issues so expertly. It’s a small niggle but I would have liked more soccer in the story, 99% of the action takes place off the field. That said, I’ll definitely listen to the rest of the series when it comes out - I liked the writing and all the characters a lot. Audio narrator Jacob Nichols has the perfect youthful voice for this and he does a great job, although sometimes he sounded like he was speaking through a tube.
